The number of packaging units in sauces, dressings and condiments rose for the first time in well over a decade in Japan during 2020. COVID-19 resulted in consumers spending more time at home and cooking and eating more meals there.
In general, glass bottles are losing out in sauces, dressings and condiments to packaging formats that are lighter and easier to carry as well as less prone to breakage. While this favours formats like PET bottles and flexible aluminium/plastic, stand-up pouches, and plastic pouches in particular, are gaining ground in this category.
While, in Western markets, consumers are increasingly turning away from plastic packaging due to growing concerns regarding its environmental impact, this remains a relatively minor concern in Japan. The hectic lifestyles of Japanese consumers make convenience a key factor in purchasing decisions, strengthening demand for plastic packaging.
As microwave cooking continues to gain traction in Japan due to its ease and convenience, players in sauces, dressings and condiments are expected to continue the development of microwaveable packaging. This could include microwaveable bags, pouches, bottles etc.
During the remainder of the forecast period (post-2022), packaging unit volume for sauces, dressings and condiments will be in decline, albeit at a slower rate than in 2021 and 2022, due to Japan’s demographic headwinds – an ageing and shrinking population. An ageing population will fuel demand for lighter pack types, such as flexible plastic, and easy-to-use closures.
