The rate of growth in demand for sauces, dressings and condiments packaging accelerated sharply during 2020. Demand for cooking sauces, dry sauces, herbs and spices, and bouillon recorded major spikes in their packaging unit volumes used in this year, as consumers prepared and ate more meals at home due to lockdown measures.
Table sauces, which is the biggest overall area in sauces, dressings and condiments, saw stronger growth in 2020, when COVID-19 restrictions meant consumers spending more time at home than usual as well as eating more at home than would normally be the case. This boosted the performance of glass bottles, the dominant pack type in table sauces, in 2020, with usage of glass bottles then returning to pre-pandemic growth rates again in 2021.
Metal food cans grew in popularity as a pack type for pasta sauces over the course of the review period – outperforming glass jars, with this trend continuing during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. Leading brands like Prego now offer a wide range of pasta sauces in metal food cans and regularly introduce new variants in this pack type.
Over the forecast period, demand for sauces, dressings and condiments packaging unit volumes will return to similar annual growth rates to those seen over the review period, following the one-off spike in demand in 2020, due to the increase in home-cooking in this year. In cooking ingredients, pasta sauces, dry sauces and cooking sauces are expected to see above-average CAGRs, boosting usage of glass jars and, in particular, metal food cans in pasta sauces, flexible plastic in dry sauces and glass jars and, in particular, flexible aluminium/plastic in cooking sauces.
Prior to the pandemic, smaller pack sizes were growing in popularity in sauces, dressings and condiments. These products were particularly popular with families in which both parents were working, which led them to cook at home less frequently.
