COVID-19 had a positive impact on demand for sauces, dressings and condiments in 2020, as consumers were spending more time at home and therefore preparing and eating more meals and snacks there. This effect was particularly notable for chilli sauces packaging and herbs and spices packaging.
Glass (glass bottles, glass jars) is the dominant pack type for table sauces as a whole, followed by rigid plastic (PET bottles, PET jars, HDPE bottles). However, plastic pouches continued to grow in popularity as a pack type in table sauces during 2021, recording further strong growth in this year, even as most other pack types slipped into decline.
Pickled products are the biggest source of demand for packaging units in sauces, dressings and condiments. While the boost provided by the pandemic for growth in demand for pickled products packaging was not as dynamic as in some other product areas, this meant that sales continued to grow in 2021, albeit at a reduced rate compared to a year earlier.
Growth in demand for sauces, dressings and condiments packaging slipped into negative territory in 2021, following the strong performance seen in 2020. The demand spike in 2020, when the pandemic first hit the country, is expected to continue to cast a shadow over the overall category performance, with positive growth not currently expected until 2024.
While glass will remain a major pack type in sauces, dressings and condiments, it is likely to lose share to lighter and more robust pack types, such as PET bottles and plastic pouches. However, the premium positioning of glass will help to ensure that it remains the most popular pack type for many products in the category.
