The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the consumption of sauces, dressings and condiments in Thailand was minimal, as many of these products are used in small quantities in cooking and to accompany meals, and because they can therefore be used for a long time. However, more people consumed more meals at home in light of pandemic restrictions, such as the closure of consumer foodservice outlets for an extended period, which drove a slightly stronger increase in packaging volumes in 2019-2020, and this continued in 2020-2021.
Pasta sauces was one of the few categories within sauces, dressings and condiments that saw a strong decline in packaging volumes in 2020 due to the pandemic, as Thai people are not as familiar with international foods, and they were not considered a priority purchase during lockdowns. Although a rebound to growth was seen in 2020-2021, volumes did not return to the pre-pandemic level, as consumers continued to cook meals with which they were more familiar.
Pickled products was one category which actually saw far higher growth in packaging volumes in the first year of the pandemic, and continued to see a solid increase 2020-2021. It benefited from its longer shelf life when consumers stocked up on products during the lockdown.
Packaging volumes in sauces, dressings and condiments are set to see steady growth over the forecast period, with growth across most pack types. Growth is also expected across most categories, with the second largest category in terms of packaging volumes, monosodium glutamate (MSG), being the only exception.
Fish sauces is one of the biggest categories within sauces, dressings and condiments in terms of packaging volumes. Demand for fish sauce is expected to remain healthy in the coming years, supported by consumers’ familiarity with the leading brand Pairoj (Tangsangha), as consumers show strong loyalty to the product quality and the original taste it offers.
