There was a general trend in the United Arab Emirates of the arrival of COVID-19 and the consequent lockdowns forcing people to stay at home benefitting the consumption of sauces, dressings, and condiments in 2020, followed by an easing of COVID-19 restrictions in 2021, giving people the freedom to be more mobile, resulting in demand for sauces, dressings and condiments weakening this year. For example, the packaging unit volumes of folding cartons and flexible aluminium/plastic used in cooking ingredients rose in 2020 but recorded a small decline in 2021 – although the packaging unit volumes of this pack type used in cooking ingredients remained higher in 2021 than their pre-pandemic levels.
Glass remains one of the most popular pack types for sauces, dressings and condiments packaging in the United Arab Emirates, thanks to its durability, which makes it easy to store. Furthermore, brands such as Al Ain and Heinz continue to use glass as a pack type for their products in table sauces and other categories as a marker of premium quality.
Smaller families are becoming more common in the United Arab Emirates and this is motivating manufacturers to explore a number of pack sizes to cater to a wider audience. This was more obvious with products such as mayonnaise, ketchup and mustard, where there are packs for single-person households, such as the 290g pack, and much larger packs for large families, such as the 1.
The adverse effects of the pandemic have made people more health conscious, meaning that healthier SKUs are expected to be in strong demand over the forecast period. With the desire to eat healthily promoting innovation, such as the use of natural ingredients, the absence of preservatives etc, in foods, it will also be encouraging the sales of salad dressings in 2021-2026.
As the country returns to normal in the post-pandemic period, brands will continue to innovate in terms of attractive packaging in order to appeal to consumers. Key factors in consumer decision making will, therefore, be a combination of both attractive packaging formats and designs, and value for money.
