- Traditionally, Herzegovina is the region where the largest concentration of RYO tobacco smokers in the country is found. Tobacco is grown in this region, and most RYO tobacco consumed there is from people’s own production or bought directly from manufacturers. Given this fact, this consumption is not included in Euromonitor International’s data. Branded RYO varieties do not have a long tradition in Bosnia-Herzegovina and neither does branded pipe tobacco. These used to be products reserved for the elite, but they penetrated the mainstream heavily during 2012 and 2013 when consumers started switching to RYO tobacco from cigarettes, driven away from cigarettes by excise hikes. The penetration of economy RYO tobacco enabled this trend to unfold. During 2011-2013, there was a reasonably strong penetration of nargila – oriental-style pipe tobacco, usually sold through hotels/restaurants/bars.
- Duhanka Zagreb doo, Imperial Tobacco BH doo and Fabrika Duhana Sarajevo dd led sales of smoking tobacco in Bosnia-Herzegovina during 2013 with respective volume shares of 53%, 36% and 8%. Consumers in Bosnia-Herzegovina recognise Duhanka’s brand Zlatni Dukat as having the best value to quality ratio. Its popularity has been boosted by word of mouth.
- Relative to the performance recorded during the review period (volume CAGR: 138%), it is expected that, in volume terms, smoking tobacco in Bosnia-Herzegovina will grow at a slower pace over the forecast period (volume CAGR: 12%). Still, smoking tobacco is expected to be the fastest-growing tobacco product category in the country, with double-digit CAGR increases both in constant value terms at 2013 prices and in volume terms. However, given the plans to introduce specific excises on smoking tobacco products, starting mid-2014, category growth is likely to slow down, as the price difference between cigarettes and smoking tobacco, particularly RYO tobacco, decreases.
