About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • In 2014, RYO tobacco dominated smoking tobacco with retail volume and value sales of 553 tonnes and Bt252 million, following growth of 1% and 2%, respectively. Meanwhile, retail volume sales of pipe tobacco grew by 1% to reach only four tonnes though current value sales rose by 4% to reach Bt38 million. Pipe tobacco recorded higher retail volume and value growth than RYO tobacco throughout the review period, largely due to a much lower sales base.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2014, many small- and medium-sized local manufacturers supplied upcountry areas with RYO tobacco. According to the Ministry of Public Health, people who live in upcountry prefer RYO tobacco to cigarettes due to high taxation of the latter. While all tobacco products have seen tax rates increase, smoking tobacco remains the lowest-priced option.

PROSPECTS

  • At constant 2014 prices, smoking tobacco is projected to see a stronger performance in the forecast period, compared with the negative 1% value CAGR recorded over the review period. A 1% value CAGR is expected over the forecast period. Growth is expected even if no new smokers appear, although the Ministry of Public Health estimates that many youths who have started smoking will continue to do so. Thus, smoking tobacco will continue to be demanded by wealthy and low-income and young and older consumers. The government aims to raise the quality of life and standard of living through new tobacco legislation. However, as long as people do not heed the health risks of smoking or see the value of life without tobacco, smoking tobacco is expected to register sales growth.
