About this Report

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Drop in consumption continued

The soft drinks market in Croatia registered an improved but still negative performance in 2011. Low disposable income levels continued to hamper consumer spending, and to save money consumers reduced expenditure on non-essentials such as soft drinks.

Competition from alcoholic drinks

The explosion of malt-based RTDs, popularly called “radlers” in summer 2011 not only revived sales of alcoholic drinks but also threatened sales of carbonates. With a fruit juice content of 60%, and unit price far lower than for similar carbonates, radlers crossed over into soft drinks territory during hot summer days.

Atlantic Grupa growing fast but far from top

Atlantic Grupa, one of the few ambitious Croatian companies, acquired its Slovenian counterpart Droga Kolinska and Badel 1862, a local bottled water business. This made the company a significant regional player in Southeast Europe, with a wide product portfolio in soft drinks, but with a long way to go to catch the two leaders on the Croatian market, Jamnica and Coca-Cola Beverages Hrvatska.

Equal importance of small and big grocers

The impulsive nature of soft drinks’ purchases benefits small grocers such as convenience stores and independents. However, in 2011 modern retail formats such as hypermarkets, supermarkets and discounters for the first time matched the volume share of small grocery retailers, at 47% of soft drinks sales. From now on, modern grocers will be the prevailing distribution channel for soft drinks.

Reversing the negative trend after 2012

Soft drinks is expected to register a CAGR of 2% in both volume and constant value terms over the forecast period as disposable household incomes rise.

Bottled Water in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • As opposed to some other non-alcoholic drinks categories, where companies offset declining volume sales with higher prices, bottled water manufacturers attempted to maintain volume sales through promotions and discounts, which although successful led to a general decline in prices.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The overwhelming leader in bottled water, domestic company Jamnica, accounted for 61% of bottled water value sales in 2011, thanks to its popular brands Jamnica and Jana. All other competitors had shares below 10%. Jamnica enjoys the support of Croatia’s most powerful company – Agrokor, a vertically integrated food conglomerate that also has its own retail network (Konzum).

PROSPECTS

  • Bottled water is expected to register high growth rates over the forecast period – ahead of some other non-alcoholic drinks categories. It seems that more and more households are giving up tap water for the benefits of bottled water.

Carbonates in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Carbonates are losing popularity to more natural soft drinks such as flavoured carbonated water and manufacturers did not show any new move to counter this. The focus shifted to packages that offer greater volume at a discounted price – pricing became the most important factor for sales, combined with heavy promotional activities. New cola carbonates brands were launched and other European manufacturers entered the Croatian carbonates market. Competition from malt-based RTDs threatened sales of carbonates during summer 2011.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Coca-Cola Beverages Hrvatska was the leading player in 2011 with a 51% off-trade value share in cola carbonates and 45% in non-cola carbonates, largely through its Coca-Cola, Fanta, and Sprite brands. Badel 1862 ranked second with a 7% share in off-trade volume terms in cola carbonates through its Pepsi brand, while Obala Grupa ranked second in non-cola carbonates with an 8% share through its Orangina.

PROSPECTS

  • Launches of “natural” variants of existing brands and limited-edition flavours are expected over the forecast period.

Concentrates in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • The dominance of the Cedevita brand in powder concentrates may have peaked with an 89% off-trade value share in 2011, as other companies took share from the leader. Local players launched products similar to the market leader, retail chains competed with private label products and foreign companies exported to Croatia, all using lower prices as their selling point. However, there seems to be a place for everyone, as all companies posted sales growth.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Atlantic Grupa dominated powder concentrates in 2011 with a 91% share of off-trade value sales, mainly thanks to the Cedevita brand. In liquid concentrates Dona led with 30% of value sales. The strong standing of these companies stems from their long tradition and presence on the market. Consumers trust local concentrates brands.

PROSPECTS

  • Concentrates has little space left for growth or innovation in Croatia, as it is showing signs of saturation, with powder concentrates approaching the limit for consumption per capita. Market leader Atlantic Grupa admitted that it does not expect any significant growth domestically and instead is focused on expanding abroad.

Fruit/Vegetable Juice in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Although economic conditions in Croatia remained uncertain in 2011, the decline in volume sales that began in 2010 halted and current value sales increased due to a slight increase in prices.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The leading fruit/vegetable juice producer Jamnica, with the Juicy and To brands, extended its lead in 2011 to hold a 26% share in current value terms. The similarity in share in both volume and value terms is an indicator that Jamnica positions its products in the mid-price segment of the market. The company targets the main consumer groups through elaborate marketing and distribution tactics used at group level in Agrokor, which is Jamnica’s owner.

PROSPECTS

  • Manufacturers are expected follow the trend already established in more mature markets and introduce natural and healthy variants of existing products, and develop new products with functional properties.

RTD Coffee in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • The market is still highly focused on premium products, as the most expensive products are the highest ranked. Private label and other companies accounted for 29% of value sales in 2011 and have room to grow in this high-priced market.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Illycaffé, with its Illy brand, overtook Nestlé, with its Nescafé Xpress brand, as the leading player. Illycaffé had a 29% value share in 2011 while Nestlé accounted for 28%. Illycaffé’s success was due to a distribution agreement with Coca-Cola Beverages. Nestlé has a similar agreement with Coca-Cola Beverages for its RTD tea brand Nestea, with similar benefits. Illycaffé posted the biggest jump in market share percentage, from 26% in 2010 to 29% in 2011.

PROSPECTS

  • The key forecast trend will be the continued development and sales growth of RTD coffee in Croatia, and its penetration of the on-trade channel. RTD coffee will increasingly become a viable substitute for traditional coffee products, especially during the summer months.

RTD Tea in Croatia - Category Analysis

HEADLINES

TRENDS

  • Rauch Croatia launched a carbonated RTD tea, available only off-trade. This was the first product of its type in the Croatian market and it was introduced simultaneously in most countries in the region.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • While domestic company Jamnica ranked first in RTD tea in 2011 with a 31% value share for its Jamnica Ice Tea, the runner-up, Coca-Cola Beverages, marketing Nestea, was close behind at the same percentage level. Both companies have well-developed distribution and marketing capabilities, which ensures their dominance.

PROSPECTS

  • Carbonated RTD tea is expected to develop further over the forecast period. RTD tea is expected to register a CAGR of 2% in volume and constant value terms. This will be driven by recovery from the economic downturn, which will contribute to higher levels of household disposable income.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Red Bull was the leading player in energy drinks with its eponymous global brand. The company held a 39% share in off-trade value terms in 2011. Coca-Cola Beverages, with its Burn and Powerade brands, ranked second with a 21% share in off-trade value terms.

    Methodology

    Methodology

    Global insight and local knowledge

With 40 years’ experience of developed and emerging markets, Euromonitor International’s research method is built on a unique combination of specialist industry knowledge and in-country research expertise.

This approach is what enables us to achieve our goal of building a market consensus view of size, shape and trends across the full distribution universe of each category. We factor in whichever channels are relevant, from large-scale grocery to direct sellers, from discount stores to local mom-and-pop outlets.

    Industry specialists

Each industry we cover is managed by an Industry Manager and team of Industry Analysts who research and report on their specialist categories all year round.

Our collaborative approach to research means that these industry teams are in constant dialogue with industry players and opinion formers. The planning of our research programmes reflects latest market trends and industry events. In completing each update project, this provides invaluable input to the testing, review and finalisation of our data.

The specialist in-house teams bring together findings from all stages of the annual research process. They work closely with in-country analysts, assess and challenge data and exercise final editorial control over the publication of new data and analysis.

    Country and regional analysts

Our in-country analyst network is managed by country and regional analysts in our offices around the world. Working closely with each in-country team, the regional research management team ensures that all country researchers are well schooled in best practices, from the information collected in store checks, to the dialogue we build in trade surveys. Our country analysts ensure that national reports explain the data trends and provide clear insights into the local market’s dynamics.

    In-country research network

To deliver fresh insights every year in countries all around the world, we believe the strongest approach is to use analysts on the ground. They bring fluency in local language, physical proximity to the best sources, an ability to engage directly with local industry contacts, and an awareness of how the products and services we study are advertised, sold and consumed. These are essential parts of our ability to report incisively on these markets.

    Research Methodology

    Our research methods

Each Euromonitor International industry report is based on a core set of research techniques:

    Desk research

With industry events, corporate activity, trends and new product introductions tracked year round by our industry team, desk research provides a starting point for the in-country research programme. Our in-country researchers will access the following sources:

    • National statistics offices governmental and official sources
    • National and international trade press
    • National and international trade associations
    • Industry study groups and other semi-official sources
    • Company financials and annual reports
    • Broker reports
    • Online databases
    • The financial, business and mainstream press

Accessing sources is only the first step. The ability to interpret and reconcile often conflicting information across multiple sources is a key aspect of the added value we provide.

    Store checks

Store checks are an integral part of our methods for product industries. Carried out on the ground across a relevant mix of channels, the information gained provides first-hand insights into the products we are researching, specifically:

    • Place: We track products in all relevant channels, selective and mass, store and non-store
    • Product: What are innovations in products, pack sizes and formats?
    • Price: What are brand price variations across channels, how do private label’s prices compare to those of branded goods?
    • Promotion: What are marketing and merchandising trends, offers, discounts and tie-ins?

Findings are cross-referenced with brand share data analysis. The results, combined with the findings of desk research, provide a strong basis for identifying key areas of questioning to take forward into our trade survey.

    Trade survey

Interaction with global players at corporate HQ and regional levels is complemented by unique local data and insights from our in-country trade surveys around the world. Through the high profile of the Euromonitor International brand, we are able to talk directly to a wide range of sources and therefore inform our analysis with the knowledge and opinions of the leading operators in the market.

    Trade surveys allow us to:

    • Fill gaps in available published data per company
    • Generate a consensus view of the size, structure and strategic direction of the category
    • Access year-in-progress data where published sources are out of date
    • Evaluate the experts’ views on current trends and market developments

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. We also interview desk research sources: industry associations; study groups; and third party observers from the trade and financial press.

Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. This dialogue enhances both parties’ understanding of the local market. The scope and reach of our trade survey also serves to eliminate bias (intentional and unintentional) from any single source.

    Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

    Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

    Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.

    Market analysis

Another integral part of all our research programmes is that all Euromonitor International data is accompanied by clear written analysis. From a research perspective, this explains and substantiates data findings. From a client perspective, this offers unique insights into local consumption trends, routes to market, brand preferences, channel dynamics and future trends.

Our country level analysis also provides invaluable input into the ability of our central industry specialist teams to marry local insights with strategic conclusions on the direction of the market regionally and globally.
