  • During 2015, soup continued to record growth, increasing by 3% in volume terms, which was attributable to an increase in disposable incomes, hectic lifestyles and innovation. In 2015, the Colombian economy continued expanding, although at a lower rate than earlier in the review period, which resulted in an increase in disposable incomes and a decline in poverty levels, expanding the base of middle/low-income consumers, which are the key purchasers of dehydrated soups. On the other hand, increasingly hectic lifestyles, as a consequence of a rise in the number of working women and a growing number of single-person households, are increasing the demand for quick and practical solutions, such as packaged soup. Modern consumers have less time available for cooking soup with natural ingredients, which is resulting in them migrating to packaged soup.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé de Colombia led soup in 2015 with a value share of 36%, which was due to the strong positioning of its brand Maggi. The player’s leading position was also supported by its distribution network and innovation strategy, with its positioning of new products such as Caldo con Costilla (rib soup), launched in June 2015. Nestlé de Colombia targeted its advertising efforts to position soup adapted to local tastes, such as ajiaco (traditional Colombian potato soup) and sancocho de pescado (traditional Colombian fish soup), which additionally were in line with consumers’ higher expectations. Nestlé de Colombia also conducted a strategy of affordable prices in order to compete with Quala, with moves into the economy segment.

  • Over the forecast period, soups is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2%, both in volume terms and at constant 2015 prices. Growth will be driven by increasing disposable incomes as a consequence of expected economic growth, and by hectic lifestyles. The pace of life is set to increase even further due to an even higher degree of urbanisation and an increase in the number of working women, which will reduce the available time for cooking.
