About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Soup is mainly consumed by Egyptians in the form of fresh home-made soup, with little tradition for the consumption of packaged soup in the country. The only form of packaged soup available in Egypt is dehydrated soup, which suffered due to a limited product range and high prices. Consequently, soup sales remained low in Egypt at the end of the review period, reaching only around 600 tonnes in 2012. These products are typically only purchased by mid- and high-income consumers.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé continued to be a strong leader in soup at the end of the review period, with its Maggi brand accounting for 44% value share in dehydrated soup and thus in overall soup in 212. The company benefits from its early entry into dehydrated soup and from strong customer regard for Maggi as a brand. The company also benefits from wide distribution.

PROSPECTS

  • Soup is expected to remain a small niche during the forecast period, with sales reaching only around 800 tonnes in 2017. Sales will continue to be limited by high prices and a limited product range. Many consumers view the preparation of dehydrated soup as little more convenient in comparison to preparing fresh soup, which they view as tastier, healthier and cheaper. Other product areas such as canned/preserved soup are however unlikely to be launched in Egypt during the forecast period, due to sluggish sales for dehydrated soup and consumers’ price-sensitivity.
