About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Soup registered a growth rate of 5% in volume terms and 7% in current value terms to reach sales of 700 tonnes and EGP51 million in sales in 2014. Soup is consumed by Egyptians primarily in the form of fresh homemade soup, with little tradition for the consumption of packaged soup in the country. The only form of packaged soup widely available in Egypt is dehydrated soup, the growth of which in the local market is hampered by high prices and the popularity of homemade soup. Thus, the purchase of these products is typically limited to mid- and high-income consumers.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Nestlé Egypt SAE continues to lead soup with its highly popular Maggi brand, accounting for a 44% value share of dehydrated soup and thus of the overall soup category in 2014. The company continues to benefit from its early entry into dehydrated soup and from strong customer regard and brand recognition for its Maggi brand, along with an extensive and well-established distribution network across Egypt.

PROSPECTS

  • Soup is expected to remain a small niche of packaged food during the forecast period, with sales expected to reach 700 tonnes in 2019. Sales will continue to be limited by high prices, a limited product range and a continued muted uptake amongst consumers. Whilst many consumers view the preparation of dehydrated soup as more convenient than preparing fresh soup, they view the latter as tastier, healthier and cheaper. Other product areas such as the canned/preserved soup are not expected to benefit from significant investment within Egypt over the forecast period as a result of continued sluggish sales of dehydrated soup over the last few years.
