About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Soup has been always a popular appetiser in Iranian cuisine, at both the retail and foodservice levels. It is especially popular during the cold winter months, particularly among those suffering from colds or flu. Traditionally, most Iranian households made their own soup from meat, poultry and other fresh ingredients. In recent years, however, this practice has changed as busier lifestyles have left people with less time for cooking and distribution of packaged soup products has improved in retail outlets. Many young Iranian families in particular have discovered the convenience, good taste and variety of flavours offered by packaged soup products. Even in households that still make their own soup from fresh ingredients, packaged products are often added to enhance thickness and flavour. Together with new launches, marketing activities and the fact that the entire category was still emerging from a relatively low base, these trends helped to ensure that retail volume and current value growth rates for soup in 2012 were up on those recorded in 2011, and also faster than the respective CAGRs for the review period.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Amadeh Laziz retained its leading position in soup in 2012, claiming a value share of 56% with its Elit range. The company’s commanding lead was built on its early mover advantage, an extensive distribution network that covers both urban and rural areas and a longstanding reputation for offering high quality products at competitive prices, not only in soup but also in several other packaged food categories. Amadeh Laziz offers dehydrated soup in a wide variety of flavours, including barley, chicken, vermicelli, mushroom, vegetable, barley with mushroom and barley with tomato. Other key factors behind its success include its use of branded soup display stands in modern and traditional retail outlets, and its focus on niche distribution channels that are often neglected by other producers, most notably butcher shops. Nestlé was the second leading soup player overall in 2012, claiming a value share of 21% with its Maggi range. Other prominent competitors included Mahnam Food Industries, Unilever, Golestan Co and Sabzan Co.

PROSPECTS

  • The outlook for soup is very promising, with retail volume and constant value growth rates over 2012-2017 expected to surpass the respective CAGRs for the review period. While this is partly because the category is still emerging from a relatively low base, other factors will also help to sustain strong demand for soup. Most notably, soup will continue to benefit from the growing desire for convenience among Iranians with busy lifestyles, as well as from improvements in distribution via modern retail channels. New launches and marketing activities by leading companies will also drive growth in retail volume and constant value sales.
