TRENDS

  • Perceived to be a healthy and convenient food option, soup gained further popularity in Italy in 2015. This held especially true for chilled soup and frozen soup, which are equally regarded as genuine and healthy meals by most consumers. On the other hand, shelf-stable soup and dehydrated soup declined in 2015, as they are regarded as less fresh and natural. Overall, this translated into growth of 2% in retail current value terms and 1% growth in retail volume terms in soup in 2015.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Soup was led by three multinational companies in 2015, namely CSI, Cia Surgelati Italiana SpA, Unilever Italia Mkt Operations and Nestlé Italiana, with 35%, 19% and 13% value shares respectively in 2015. CSI owes its share to the leading position of its Findus brand in frozen soup, in which it accounted for a 50% share of value sales in 2015. Unilever was dominant in UHT soup and dehydrated soup in 2015, but also present in instant soup, always with its Knorr brand. Finally, Nestlé held a 19% value share for its Buitoni brand in frozen soup. Thus, whilst Findus and Buitoni are present only within frozen soup, Knorr has a more diverse product range across different soup categories.

PROSPECTS

  • Various factors will shape the performance of soup during the forecast period. First, volume consumption is expected to increase, albeit at a moderate level. In part, this will be driven by the ongoing shift towards products such as chilled soup and frozen soup, which have a higher volume content by nature. Furthermore, private label is likely to increase its presence in these latter categories, which will have a negative impact on value sales.
