About this Report

Executive Summary

Trends

  • Demand for convenience is growing, particularly amongst the middle to upper LSM groups, which are in the best position to pay more for added convenience. Fast-paced lifestyles mean that these consumers in particular are looking for convenient and healthy meal solutions. Chilled soup is gaining traction in South Africa, as a growing number of retailers are expanding their ranges and giving the product increased shelf-space. Chilled soup carries a relatively high unit price, yet promotional pricing and convenience are driving sales.

Competitive Landscape

  • Unilever South Africa dominated soup with a value share of 52% in 2015. The company’s Knorr brand led dehydrated soup and instant soup in this year. Unilever was followed by Mars Africa, which held a 16% value share in 2015, thanks to its Royco brand. Private label players such as Pick ‘n’ Pay, Shoprite Checkers and Woolworths have a strong presence in soup due to their strength in chilled soup and presence in the other soup categories.

Prospects

  • Innovation in terms of wider flavour varieties and more convenient packaging is necessary to drive growth in soup over the forecast period. Manufacturers need to emphasise the nutritional benefits of consuming soup; for instance that the product can represent a proportion of a consumer’s “five a day”, which would encourage consumption amongst health-conscious consumers in particular. These consumers may also be attracted to healthier products, such as those with reduced fat and reduced sodium, and even those enriched with additional vitamins and minerals.
