  • Soup is entirely dominated by dehydrated soup, with other formats negligible. Shelf stable soup witnessed a dramatic fall in volume sales in 2015 as a result of a marked absence of brands, most of which are imported. Trade restrictions and high industry prices precluded firms from importing shelf stable soup, and the few resources available were directed to high-demand product categories.

Competitive Landscape

  • Multinational Nestlé Venezuela SA led soup with 56% of retail value sales in 2015. Its Maggi brand enjoys a well-established reputation among Venezuelan households and offers a wide variety of products not only in soup but also in stock cubes, in which it also held a dominant position. Domestic competitor Industrias Iberia ranked second in soup with 37% of retail value sales. This company manages a wide range of flavours in soup, including traditional chicken and meat favours, and cream-based dehydrated soup flavours such as mushroom, asparagus, tomato, chicken and corn. It also ranked second in stock cubes and powders and led dry sauces. Both players have a good understanding of Venezuelans’ preferences and needs, which contributed to the development and maintenance of such strong positions.

  • Low unit prices are projected to remain the main factor behind the positive performance expected in dehydrated soup over the forecast period. Venezuelans like to have chicken and meat-based soup enriched with various vegetables on a frequent basis, implying consumption patterns are expected to remain stable over the coming years. Dehydrated soup will remain by far the largest product category, with the rest of the presentations expected to remain negligible. In the restricted business environment, importers of shelf stable soup will continue to encounter difficulties when attempting to bring products into the country at a competitive price, and no new brands or entrants are expected in the medium term.
