TRENDS

  • Rum performed very well in 2012; white rum in the lower income segments of the population and dark rum in the upper income segments. Because of this, two brands posted solid growth: the white rum Brugal and the dark rum Barceló Dorado. This in turn caused the decline of premium-imported beverages such as vodka and blended Scotch whisky. The increase in rum consumption was the result of very successful advertising campaigns.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Brugal remained the leading Dominican rum brand, followed by Barceló and Bermúdez. Brugal is the brand most Dominicans identify with and it is marketed as “the rum of Dominicans” and it is also the most recognised local brand outside of the country. Brugal accounted for 69% total volume share of rum in 2012.

PROSPECTS

  • According to industry experts, the tax reform in place since January 2013 will result in a unit price increase between 10 and 15%, which will result in a drop of 15-20% volume sales, depending on the beverage in question. Those that will be more severely affected will be the cheapest drinks, since they are more inelastic to price increases, whereas premium brands will keep growing.
