TRENDS

  • Tariff surcharges on imported products increased prices by 25% since March. This was in addition to the changes to the ICE (Consumption Tax) tax formula in January, so imported products were affected twice by cost increases. Domestic production was also affected but less than imported segments such as whiskies, brandy, cognac, and rum especially as the tax was proportional to alcohol levels.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The most important domestic manufacturer is Azende Corp Cía Ltda, which led sales in 2015 with a 22% volume share. This company leads aguardiente with its brand Zhumir, with its flavoured products that are popular with different consumer segments. One of the main factors in leading sales is historic brand positioning and prestige; even the most demanding groups are guided by these factors and are not deterred by the high prices.

PROSPECTS

  • The preferences of regular customers will be challenged by the new prices and the future wide range of products that will be available in the middle of 2016 due to the trade agreement with the European Union. The diversity of brands and domestic developments are expected to continue with more stable import taxes for international brands. Furthermore, distilled spirits could gain an important share of specialist distribution channels as flavour varieties are becoming a strong competitor in general terms, while the rest of the domestic production is acquiring standards that will meet mid- level preferences. All of this depends on how the illegal market is involved in overall consumption, especially regarding imported brands.
