TRENDS

  • Despite the emergence of the first signs of recovery for the Spanish economy in 2013, the Spanish population remains very cautious about all unnecessary expenditure, with sales of spirits suffering as a result. 2013 saw further declines in on-trade sales of spirits as the Spanish consumer foodservice industry continued to struggle. During September 2012, the Spanish government approved the withdrawal of special reduced rates of taxation for spirits and the regular VAT rate of 21% now applies to all products in the category, which caused further losses for spirits and further compromised sales during 2013.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Pernod Ricard maintained its leading position in spirits in Spain in 2013 with a 21% volume share. Pernod Ricard’s major competitor in spirits at global level, Diageo suffered from falling demand for its spirits brands during the recent economic recession and lost its second position to Maxxium España SL in 2010. In 2013, Maxxium held second position in spirits with a 16% volume share, while Diageo was forced to settle for third position with a 12% volume share.

PROSPECTS

  • Spain’s leading manufacturers of spirits believe that it will be difficult for them to return to the volume sales recorded during the years preceding the economic crisis as Spaniards are generally moving towards healthier habits and reducing their intake of beverages which are high in alcohol. Gin and vodka are likely to slowly approach the volume sales of rum and whiskies as more equilibrium between the major spirits categories is expected to emerge during the forecast period.
