TRENDS

  • Total volume sales of sports and energy drinks contracted by 1% in 2013, as the dominant category, sports drinks, continued losing popularity. Whilst consumers were more inclined to drink functional drinks for non-sporting purposes such as after taking a bath or even during desk work, the functional bottled water category, where new innovations were actively introduced, stole consumers from sports drinks. Sports drinks contracted by 2% in total volume in 2013.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Coca-Cola (Japan) continued to be the leader in sports and energy drinks, with a 51% total volume share in 2013. The company reinforced its leading position mainly thanks to the sales recovery of Aquarius and good performance of Aquarius Zero. After two years of sales drop, Aquarius was refined by adding up the amount of Natrium (40mg per 100ml) so that the brand could claim its benefit for those suffering from heat disorder. Added with some other components such as arginine, the brand also started to highlight its benefit of energy supply in addition to its rehydration function. The refinement supported by the aggressive promotional activities proved to be successful, leading to the company’s sales growth.

PROSPECTS

  • Total volume sales of sports and energy drinks are expected to contract at a 1% CAGR over the forecast period. The migration of consumers from sports drinks to functional bottled water is likely to continue, with more innovations expected to be launched in that category. This will lead to the future contraction of sports drinks. That said, given that sales of sports drinks are largely related to summer temperatures, unpredictable temperatures in future summers will likely change the shape of sports drinks sales during the forecast period.
