TRENDS

  • Spreads continues to expand, with total volume sales in the area rising by 2% in 2015 due to rising disposable incomes, the increasingly hectic pace of modern life and the innovation efforts of firms. The Colombian economy continues to expand, albeit at a slower pace, due to the end of the commodity boom. On the other hand, hectic lifestyles are resulting in consumers looking towards some spreads such as jam, combined with bread or biscuit, as a quick solution for breakfast or dinner instead of more time demanding dishes.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Colombia as group led sales in 2015, with its two firms (Colombina SA and Conservas Colombina SA – La Constancia) recording a combined value share of 16%. The group supported growth with the strong positioning of its La Costancia (jam) and Nucita (chocolate spreads) brands. In this latter area, the company increased its sales share from 32% in 2013 to 33% in 2015, reducing the gap with Nutella (the market leader) thanks to a low price strategy, which allowed for increased distribution amongst middle income groups. The group’s firms have a well-established distribution network which is able to reach traditional grocery retailers thanks to good positioning within the packaged food industry.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, spreads will continue expanding moderately, with the area having a projected total volume CAGR of 1% and sales set to reach 23,900 tonnes by 2020 as a result of increasing disposable incomes and the growing penetration of spreads among middle income consumers. Despite lower growth, the Colombian economy will continue to expand, with purchasing power set to rise further.
