TRENDS

  • Jams and preserves, and to a lesser extent honey, are traditionally made in many Serbian homes or purchased illicitly from neighbours or artisanal producers at popular open markets. However, stricter regulations and rising expectations in terms of quality mean that consumers are increasingly choosing packaged and branded jams and preserves and honey products over homemade varieties. This situation has attracted more companies into the jams and preserves and honey categories in recent years, not only domestic manufacturers but also regional and international players offering imported products. In 2014, for instance, Bulgarian company Cima 99 started importing its jam products into Serbia.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Retailer Delhaize continued to lead spreads in 2013 with an overall value share of 17%. The company’s private label spreads products are available across Serbia via its extensive retail network, which includes convenience stores, supermarkets, hypermarkets and discounters outlets. Moreover, unlike most branded manufacturers, Delhaize competes in all spreads categories. The company’s overall value share in spreads increased steadily throughout the review period as consumers showed a growing appreciation for the decent quality standards and competitive prices of its private label products, particularly during the worst years of the economic crisis.

PROSPECTS

  • Growth in retail volume sales of spreads over the forecast period is expected to be slower than during the review period, as is value sales growth at constant 2014 prices. This will be mainly due to increasing maturity, though demand for certain types spreads will also be inhibited as rising health awareness leads more Serbians to reduce their consumption of bread and other baked goods. Moreover, retail volume and constant value sales growth will be restricted by the fact that the homemade production of jams and preserves and honey is still quite common in Serbia, particularly in rural areas.
