About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Over the course of the review period, spreads in Serbia was marked by a shift away from homemade jams and preserves towards industrially produced packaged alternatives. This was mainly due to the fact that young women in Serbian lead much faster lifestyles than their mothers did in preceding decades, which means that they do not have the time to prepare homemade jams and preserves every autumn as previous generations did. In addition, the number of producers and brands in the category continues to increase at a rapid rate, which makes industrial jams and preserves much more affordable. Under these circumstances, it no longer seems rational for young Serbians to spend time preparing homemade jams and preserves. The shift away from homemade jams and preserves was most obvious between 2003 and 2008, although it appears to have reached the point where there is little evidence in terms of rising volume sales of jams and preserves.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Two domestic companies shared leadership among branded players in spreads in Serbia in 2012. These were Nectar doo and Danube Foods doo, which offer the Nectar and Moc Prirode brands respectively. Each of these product portfolios accounted for 12% of total spreads value sales during 2012. In addition, each of the product portfolios of these companies offers a wide range of high quality jams and preserves offered under a modern brand made. Yet, biggest retailer in the country – Delhaize Serbia doo is leading company in Serbian spreads market if we include both producers and owners of private labels. This company offers products in three most popular spread subcategories: honey, chocolate spreads and jams and preserves. Prices of Delhaize’s private label spreads are very acceptable (which is a great advantage in moments when effects of economic crisis are still present).

PROSPECTS

  • Spreads in Serbia is expected to continue increasing in volume at a CAGR of 2% over the forecast period. The slow yet steady growth is expected to represent the tail end of the shift away from homemade jams and preserves towards packaged alternatives which has been inn evidence over the last ten years. This trend is expected to fade away during the forecast period due to the fact that the majority of Serbian housewives have already ceased preparing their own jams and preserves at home. Volume growth in spreads is thus expected to be driven predominantly by the increase in company activity in the category as it is expected that the number of new brands in the category will increase at a relatively healthy rate during the forecast period.
