  • Jams and preserves and honey are the largest categories in spreads, and each accounted for 46% of total volume sales in 2015. Overall, the category is small in terms of value (BsF885 million) and volume sales (annual per capita consumption at 0.04kg/person) as frequency of purchase and consumption are occasional. Except for chocolate spreads, which saw certain dynamism with the entrance of Nestlé Venezuela at the beginning of the review period, the category stagnated in terms of new entrants, new product developments and large-scale advertising campaigns.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Given that honey accounted for 66% of retail value sales in spreads, artisanal producers dominated the category with a 43% share in 2015. The most important players in jams and preserves, the second largest category in spreads, were Alimentos Polar (La Vienesa) and Alimentos Nina (Nina) with a combined 63% of retail value sales in 2015. Nationwide presence and wide flavour ranges contributed to the competitive positions of both companies.

  • Possibilities for expansion in spreads are expected to be limited due to factors such as lack of dynamism in regards to new entrants and new developments, increasing competition from homemade healthier substitutes and low economic improvement.
