Tea registered off-trade volume growth in 2015, with sales increasing by 3% to reach 1,338 tonnes. That said, tea also experienced slowing off-trade volume and current value growth in 2015, mainly due to its maturity and saturation. In addition, rapid growth of RTD tea has meant that there has been a shift away from tea leaves or instant tea towards RTD tea as many consumers look for convenience and innovative flavours.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Unilever Hong Kong Ltd led tea with a 39% share of off-trade value sales in 2015. Its brands, Lipton and Rickshaw, held the first and third largest off-trade value shares in tea in 2015. With its strong brand portfolio, along with product innovations and aggressive marketing promotions, Unilever Hong Kong has been the number one leading player in tea for many years.

PROSPECTS

  • Tea sales are expected to grow by a 3% off-trade volume CAGR over the forecast period. The demand for black tea is mature and will see limited growth, while fruit/herbal tea will continue to be one of the main growth drivers in tea. Fruit tea is easier to be accepted by young people as the flavours are more innovative.
