Cigars suffered in 2009. US sales, the largest in the world, declined and Cuba reduced cigar tobacco acreage due to poor sales for premium brands. Cigars that look like cigarettes but that are priced lower proved successful. However, many tax loopholes closed, while premium cigar sales were damaged by global recession.
