EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Greater dynamism: A sign of a healthier economy and calmer climate

Over 2010 the performance of the cigarette market in Guatemala was better than results accomplished over 2009. An important factor impacting greater dynamism of the category was a healthier economy that allowed companies to introduce stronger price increases, whereas over 2009 prices remained stagnant. Additionally, over 2009, the smoking ban which was approved over 2008 came into force. The approval caused turmoil in the category, with worries that the measure would have a significant negative impact on consumption. For this reason, companies did not heavily engage in advertising or promotion. Innovation efforts were also minimal. In contrast, 2010 was dynamic, with important innovations in the market, and greater promotional and advertising activities, which had a positive effect on the market.

Premiumisation or penetration?

During 2010, innovation went to extremes; from the premium, most expensive products to the economy most affordable brands. Innovation started to dictate companies’ ability to further penetrate the market at the economy end and drove higher unit price growth at the premium end. Value added features, especially those focused on flavour, were the key aspects improved by new premium brands to capture higher-end consumers who were willing to pay a larger mark-up for these qualities. On the other hand, lower unit prices were accomplished by introducing larger pack sizes, going from the traditional 20 units to 24 units. With these extreme positions, companies are able to balance their product portfolios and also their results in the market. Customers also have a wider product range to choose from, being able to consume products that best fit their tastes and budget.

Multinationals and international brands’ domain persists

Both in cigarettes and cigars, multinational and international brands dominate sales. On the cigar side of the market, sales are led by premium, handmade international brands. On the cigarettes side, multinationals have complete dominance, with a longstanding presence in the market, high top of mind and great product distribution. National brands could not stand a chance competing with these giants, in a strongly regulated market.

Traditional channel dominance favours cigarette sales despite legislation

Sales of cigarettes are primarily through traditional distribution channels in Guatemala. These outlets greatly outnumber modern retailers. For this reason, they more easily reach consumers across the country, who prefer to purchase in these outlets that are closer to their homes. Distribution through this channel is favourable for cigarette sales in the country. Not only are they able to reach a wider base of consumers, but they are also able to offer additional benefits than modern channel outlets. Many of these small independent outlets do not comply with current legislation; they sell to minors, and they sell loose cigarettes. With these common practices, cigarettes of different brands are able to have a strong performance, since customers can buy them singly, minimising the effect of high pack prices.

Stricter laws yet to come

Over late-2010 and early-2011 some anti-tobacco activists presented to Congress, law initiatives to further regulate the tobacco industry in the country. These projects, which could be approved as early as 2011, have stricter regulations than those currently in place. Anti-tobacco activists are suggesting legislation to enable graphic health warnings to be mandatory on cigarette packages, restrictions on brand names, logos, etc. Although law enforcement is lax at the consumer end of the market, tobacco products do not tend to disregard them, as this goes against their international standards. If stricter laws were approved, market performance could be affected over the forecast period. It is expected that through the negotiation process that passing of laws suppose, these could ultimately be milder than previewed, having a lesser impact on the market.
