Volume sales grow in 2014

In 2014, cigarettes registered moderate volume growth, following a year of decline. Volume sales rose for a number of reasons, including growth in the overall adult population, new product developments and aggressive price promotions.

Rising pack prices result in the growth of illicit trade

2014 was an exceptional year in the sense that both legal and illicit cigarette sales saw growth in volume terms. Illicit sales grew as a result of a rise in the specific excise tax charged per packet/cigarette, lack of preventative measures against illicit trade and insufficient mechanisms in terms of surveillance against the trade of illicit cigarettes. Moreover, the rise in specific excise tax had a larger impact on economy cigarette brands, resulting in higher percentage tax burdens on cheaper packets. Due to the price sensitivity of Turkish consumers on the whole, middle- to low-income consumers were further swayed to shift to illicit cigarettes.

JTI Tutun Urunleri San AS shows strongest growth due to successful pricing strategy

Philip Morris Sabanci Pazarlama ve Satis continued to lead cigarettes in 2013 through its well-established position, sophisticated distribution network and the popularity of many of its brands, such as Marlboro, Parliament, Lark and Muratti. However, JTI Tutun Urunleri was the clear winner of 2014 and increased its share of the market. This was achieved primarily through aggressive price promotions placed on Camel, one of JTI Tutun Urunleri’s most established brands, in May 2014, not to mention packaging innovations for a number of products and the continued popularity of its flagship brand Winston, particularly popular among younger smokers.

Independent small grocers remains the leading distribution channel in 2014

In 2014, the most notable distribution channel for the sale of cigarettes was independent small grocers, as these outlets are found on most streets and continue to be the most popular place for consumers to shop for certain items, such as cigarettes. Cigar and cigarillos were distributed mostly through forecourt retailers. However, sales through tobacco specialists are growing due to the rapid increase in the number of shopping malls in urban centres which customarily feature such shops.

Cigarettes and smoking tobacco are expected to register a volume decline whilst cigars is expected to grow

Cigarettes is expected to register a retail volume decline over the forecast period due to a combination of planned increases in excise taxes and continued efforts on the part of government and civil society initiatives that aim to curb cigarette consumption. Smoking tobacco is expected to register a volume decline, primarily as a result of growing levels of illicit RYO tobacco consumption. Cigars and cigarillos on the other hand, is expected to grow as a result of increasing product availability in terms of distribution networks and a more relaxed legislative environment that is expected to allow a wider variety of products in the Turkish market.
