EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Volume sales register a decline in 2013

In 2013 cigarettes registered a volume decline, following a positive performance in 2012. This decline was mainly due to the poor performance of mid tar cigarettes, which still accounts for the majority of sales of cigarettes. Low tar and ultra low tar cigarettes registered relatively much higher growth than mid tar cigarettes.

Growth in illicit trade stems from excise tax increases, which negatively affect the growth of cigarettes

Due to inefficient prevention measures, a lack of monitoring and excise tax increases, which led consumers to shift consumption from legal cigarettes to illicit cigarettes, illicit tobacco trade registered an increase in 2013, which had a negative impact on legal sales of tobacco. Turkish consumers’ high price-sensitivity makes the consumption of illicit cigarettes highly dependent on price increases in the legal market. Generally, middle- to low-income consumers shift to illicit cigarettes after price increases due to rises in excise tax.

Philip Morris Sabanci Pazarlama ve Satis continued to lead cigarettes in 2013, thanks to its well-established position, sophisticated distribution network and the popularity of many of its brands, such as Marlboro, Parliament, Lark and Muratti. Jti Tutun Urunleri ranked second due to its continuous product and packaging innovations, as well as its flagship brand Winston, which is particularly popular amongst younger smokers.

Independent small grocers remains the leading distribution channel in 2013

The main distribution channel for cigarettes in Turkey in 2013 was independent small grocers, as these are convenient outlets for consumers. Newsagent-tobacconists/kiosks was the second most important channel. Cigars and cigarillos, however, were mainly distributed through forecourt retailers in 2013, followed by tobacco specialists.

Cigarettes is expected to register a volume decline, whilst cigars is set to see an increase

Cigarettes is expected to register a retail volume decline in the forecast period, in line with the planned increases in excise taxes in Turkey, which tend to have an immediate negative effect on sales of tobacco. Cigars and smoking tobacco, on the other hand, are forecast to register volume growth, due to their smaller size and a shift from the black market to legal sales due to an expected more relaxed legislative framework with regard to manufacturing and sales.
