EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Volume sales increase in 2012

With the exception of 2008, 2012 was the first year in which volume sales of cigarettes registered an increase during the last five years. Low tar and ultra low tar cigarettes saw a relatively higher increase than mid tar cigarettes, although the latter are still the most popular in Turkey.

Decline in illicit trade leads to an increase in retail sales of cigarettes

Illicit tobacco trade declined substantially in 2012, due to increased government efforts to seize illicit cigarettes. In addition, the lack of an increase in excise taxes kept retail selling prices stable. Both of these developments had a positive influence on the retail market, benefiting sales of mid-priced and premium cigarettes in particular.

Philip Morris Sabanci Pazarlama ve Satis AS continues to lead in 2012

Philip Morris Sabanci Pazarlama ve Satis continued to lead cigarettes in 2012, thanks to its well-established position, sophisticated distribution network and the popularity of many of its brands, such as Marlboro, Parliament, Lark and Muratti. JTI Tutun Urunleri ranked second due to its continuous product and packaging innovations, as well as its flagship brand Winston, which is particularly popular amongst students.

Independent small grocers remains the leading distribution channel

The main distribution channel for cigarettes in Turkey in 2012 was independent small grocers, as these are convenient outlets for consumers. Newsagent-tobacconists/kiosks was the second most important channel. Cigars and cigarillos, however, were mainly distributed through forecourt retailers in 2012, followed by tobacco specialists.

Cigarettes is forecast to record a volume decline whilst cigars is to see an increase

Cigarettes is expected to register negative growth in the forecast period, in line with the planned increase in excise taxes in Turkey, which tend to have an immediate negative effect on tobacco sales. Cigars and smoking tobacco, on the other hand, are forecast to register positive volume growth, due to their smaller sizes and a shift from black market to legal sales. The excise tax on cigars, which had a substantial negative impact on sales of cigars in 2012, is expected to decrease in 2013.
