  • Theatres and theatre audiences increased in Argentina over the last three years of the review period. Euromonitor International estimated that there were nearly 14 million spectators in the country in 2012, 12% more than in 2011. Buenos Aires city feels especially proud to promote itself as a “theatre city” due to the great concentration of theatre activity in it. There are around 35 commercial theatres such as Multiteatro or Gran Rex that are managed by businessmen and present the biggest productions; on the other hand there are more than 160 independent theatres that present a wide variety of plays where the artists themselves usually assume the risk of producing the play. Besides in Buenos Aires city there are official theatres such as Teatro Nacional Cervantes, which depends on the National Culture Secretary and three theatres called the San Martin Complex, which depends on the Buenos Aires city government.
