  • Despite the travel warnings and security concerns that bottlenecked inbound tourism flows to the country, tourist attractions still demonstrated tremendous growth in 2012, largely due to the increasing popularity of domestic tourism, thanks to efforts by the national tourism board and its partners in the industry. This was also facilitated by the burgeoning middle-class population, which meant that locals now had greater access to tourist attractions which were previously associated largely with foreigners and the privileged few. This trend is likely to increase in the short to medium term, especially as the government seeks to woo international tourists back into the country and reverse the effects of the travel warnings.

PROSPECTS

  • Tourist attractions is set to be the recipient of heavy advertising in the forecast period, as more products and destinations are added to the offering, such as the great landscapes around Lake Victoria, Mt Kenya and the Rift Valley, as well as agro-tourism destinations, over and above the coastal beaches, national parks and Maasai settlements. This is in line with the national tourism board’s objective of diversifying the tourism product, which is amongst the national development goals outlined in the Kenya Vision 2030 policy document.
