During 2010, Chilean economic growth returned to pre-crisis 2009 levels, with GDP increasing by 4.7%. Unemployment decreased, reaching around 8% at the end of the review period – a development that resulted in increased consumer confidence and which, along with easier credit access, helped to boost demand for more expensive toys and video games.

Retailers show interest in creating videogames department stores

High growth in 2010 resulted in an increase in videogames by department stores, which have become more aware of consumer technology trends.

Children became more interested in technological toys

Chilean children and adolescents are increasingly interested in using social network sites like Facebook, blogs and instant messaging services. This generation is more interactive and eager for information and new knowledge. Chilean children have shown a preference for games based on virtual communities, with penetration rates reaching above 50% for both girls and boys under the age of 14. As a result of the growing interest in innovative toys and videogames, human interaction has decreased. Producers have responded through the launch of dolls, plush toys and action figures that offer virtual community interaction.

  • Rapid retail value growth of 49% in 2010 was mainly due to the improving Chilean economy. 2010 was a year of recovery following the decline in GDP in 2009, when video game retail value sales stagnated.   • Microsoft recorded the largest increase in retail value share in 2010 due to the launch of Kinect - a motion sensing device that allows users to play the game via body movements without the use of a control.
