EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Rising toys and games sales

Toys and games achieved a moderate growth rate during 2010, despite the worsening economic situation in Greece. Value sales of both traditional toys as well as video games increased in low single digits during 2010. The better performance of toys and games came in contrast to the Greek economy during the year, as parents prioritized spending on children and cut expenditures in other areas before reducing toys purchasing.

Toys and games relatively untouched by the Greek financial crisis

The fact that the government introduced a number of austerity measures (eg increased VAT and reduced minimum wage from EUR700 to EUR592) resulted in increased price sensitivity and preference. However, this does not seem to have affected toys and games which are traditionally less vulnerable to macroeconomic fluctuations. It is likely that growth has been sustained by parents’ devotion to their children. Parents tend to economize first on their own expenditure rather than sacrificing that which they spend on their children.

Traditional toys industry remains fragmented

The market for traditional toys and games in Greece is highly fragmented. While there are a number of large companies present in Greece, such as US based Mattel and Hasbro, Italy’s Giochi Preziosi, and Greece based toymaker AS Co, smaller companies continue to account for a significant share of the market. Recently, more unbranded toys made in Asia entered the market that now account for a significant share of toys sold in Greece as well. On the other hand, video games hardware is very concentrated, with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft the only players in the area. Alternatively, video games software is more fragmented, especially in Games for PC/Macs, with many companies present in the market.

Toy specialists and media stores most popular distribution channels

Distribution of traditional toys and games in Greece is largely in the hands of chained traditional toys and games stores that offer a wide range of products and different prices. However, grocery and online retailers have also been increasing their share of toy sales in recent years. Within video games, media product stores, such as Fnac, lead sales during the review period. While online retailing and particularly digital downloads are challenging the dominance of media stores, the expert advice offered at such stores kept customers coming during the review period.

Forecast period sales slow down due to economic crisis

Over the forecast period, toys and games will be influenced by the recession, with the Greek economy expected to take several years to recover. This manifests itself in a period of declining and static growth for traditional toys and games. However, overall toys and games will rise albeit at a slower rate, largely due to the continued health of the video games sector.

The fact that the government was forced to go to the IMF for aid resulted in the implementation of a series of austerity measures and changes in employment law that have resulted in a major increase in consumer price sensitivity – a development that has led to a decline in expenditure on non-essential products such as traditional toys and games.

  • Hasbro continued to lead sales in 2010, recording a retail value share of 18%. Popular Hasbro brands include Playskool, FurReal Friends, My Little Pony and Mr Potato Head. Hasbro is strongly positioned within the games and puzzles segment, thanks to titles such as Monpoly and Trivial Pursuit, and action figures areas.
