Business tourism increases considerably

Bangladesh has a strategic position in Asia Pacific whereby businesses from Pakistan and India see great potential. With cheap labour and a fairly secure environment, Bangladesh has become a low-cost manufacturing hub and many businesses from neighbouring countries have even relocated to Bangladesh. India was the leading source market for arrivals in Bangladesh in 2012 and the primary reason for this are the trade links between the two countries.

Arrivals from China and Australia show significant increases

Arrivals from China and Australia both increased by more than 20% in 2012. The significant increase in arrivals from China was due to increased trade relations between the two countries, whereas Australian arrivals increased since many Bangladeshi citizens have settled permanently in Australia. The absolute number of arrivals was fairly low from both China and Australia; however, this is expected to increase at a significant rate during the forecast period.

Thailand and Malaysia become popular destinations for outbound travellers

Southeast Asian countries, especially Thailand and Malaysia, have become popular destinations for outbound travellers from Bangladesh. The primary reason for this development is the economical travel packages that such destinations offer to tourists and the corresponding experience which makes the trips well worth the money. This trend is not restricted to travellers from Bangladesh only but is applicable to tourists all over the world, especially in Asia.

Improved infrastructure helps boost domestic travel and tourism

Domestic travel and tourism in Bangladesh is a major source of income for the industry, and improved communication and transport systems have encouraged the local population to travel within the country. The government of Bangladesh made considerable efforts to promote the industry in 2012 via improved infrastructure, especially the road network, and better accommodation facilities.

Promotion of Bangladesh as a tourist destination is essential

Bangladesh as a tourist destination has benefited from increased arrivals from India. This is mainly due to its close proximity to the country Bangladesh has many natural resources that are unexplored. Sustained growth over the forecast period will be possible if there is a clearer agenda for the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC), which acts as the tourism board for the country. Promotion of Bangladesh as a tourist destination will enable it to be become visible in the global tourist arena.
