EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

New presidency faced with many challenges

Denis Sassou Nguesso was elected president in the July 2009 elections, and will remain in this position for seven years. The new government is faced with a number of challenges such as poverty, high unemployment rates, a poor infrastructure and an inadequate travel and tourism industry. The government will be required to develop travel and tourism, which suffered over the review period as a result of political instability and civil war. Congo-Brazzaville’s economy will only recover if the new government is able to find ways to inject foreign investment into the country.

Congo-Brazzaville is a new destination for Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways introduced flights three times a week between Congo-Brazzaville and Nairobi in 2009. With Congo-Brazzaville offered as a new destination, travel and tourism could experience a boost due to an increase in business and leisure arrivals from the new airline route. The new route is also likely to prove popular as the road and rail infrastructure remains poor and in need of investment as a result of damage caused by years of civil war.

Gorilla tourism and eco-tourism is a focal point

Odzala National Park is home to the densest population of the western lowland gorilla, and the Planter Foundation and Wildlife Frontiers plan to develop and establish a number of eco-tourism services and facilities in this area. Nevertheless, poaching and slaughtering of western lowland gorillas in Congo-Brazzaville has increased dramatically and this could affect eco-tourism in the county overall. The International Lobby is putting increasing pressure on the Congo-Brazzaville Government to take major conservation steps and stop those who kill and poach gorillas. If Congo-Brazzaville puts such conservation measures in place, travel and tourism will be boosted, like in neighbouring Rwanda, which generates US$200 per day from gorilla travel and tourism.

Travel and tourism needs further enhancement

Congo-Brazzaville enjoys many rich, natural landscapes, including swamps, falls, rapids, virgin forests, wildlife and sandy beaches. Unfortunately, the country has not been able to invest in or develop these natural sites due to past political instability; in addition, the country does not have enough funding to attract tourists and promote itself internationally. Congo-Brazzaville requires promotion and investment to boost travel and tourism, and it needs to develop its roads to facilitate transportation. 2009 saw a positive move with the new government advocating investment in travel and tourism to boost the country’s economy.

Travel alerts continue in some parts of Congo-Brazzaville

Congo-Brazzaville was relatively stable in 2009 and recovering from civil war; however, travel alerts as a result of armed robberies and roadblocks continued in some parts of the country, making it dangerous for travellers. These alerts were most common in the Pool region, just south of Brazzaville, along the Ubangi River on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and on rail routes between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.

  • Summary 1 Research Sources

TOURISM FLOWS INBOUND

Headlines

Trends

  • Arrivals from France account for the majority of tourism flows inbound in Congo-Brazzaville. Direct flights on Air France make travelling between France and Congo-Brazzaville fairly easy. Many French citizens have established their businesses in Congo-Brazzaville mainly in oil, ports and timber, while many French leisure visitors travel to Congo-Brazzaville on holiday or to visit friends.

Prospects

  • Congo-Brazzaville is an emerging market in travel and tourism but growth is expected to be slow in the forecast period even though the government plans to encourage business investment. As a result of the economic crisis, growth in the number of arrivals is expected to slow down during the forecast period, although it will still remain positive, up by 16% on 2009.

Category Data

TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION

Headlines

Trends

  • Congo-Brazzaville’s travel accommodation’s value growth remained stable at 2% in 2009, although at a much lower rate than the year prior the global economic crisis.

Hotels

Prospects

  • Travel accommodation in Congo-Brazzaville has much room for improvement, and until the number of visitors to the country increases, progress will be slow. Once the country is promoted internationally and becomes a safer destination, then hotels and other travel accommodation will see positive growth in the forecast period. Travel accommodation is predicted to grow by 11% in value terms, reaching CFAF9 billion by the end of the forecast period.

Category Data

TRANSPORTATION

Headlines

Trends

  • Air transportation in Congo-Brazzaville has not seen significant value growth due to the global financial crisis and plane crashes that have caused confidence in the country’s air transportation industry to deteriorate. Air transportation grew by 2% in current value terms in 2009 to reach CFAF53 billion.

Airlines

Prospects

  • In December 2008, the Congolese government signed a CFAF374 billion concession agreement with the French group Bollore. The 27-year concession is set to modernise Pointe-Noire port’s container terminal facilities and improve activities to encourage more maritime traffic to Congo-Brazzaville. Work commenced at the beginning of 2010. The project will also have a positive impact on the country’s economy by providing more jobs at the port, which should increase from 576 in 2009 to 1,000 by 2018.

Category Data

CAR RENTAL

Headlines

Trends

  • Car rental is still in its infancy in Congo-Brazzaville, largely due to the poor road infrastructure outside the main cities which makes driving difficult and dangerous. Car rental operators are mainly concentrated in the cities of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire.

Prospects

  • Upcoming developments and projects in Congo-Brazzaville’s infrastructure, coupled with an increase in visitor numbers in the forecast period, are expected to drive car rental growth. Car rental sales are predicted to grow at a 6% CAGR over the forecast period, with value sales reaching CFAF10 billion.

Category Data

TRAVEL RETAIL

Headlines

Trends

  • Travel retail services are relatively undeveloped in Congo-Brazzaville, and ticketing remains the key focus for many travel agents within the country. As the internet is not yet available to most of the population, agents remain the main channel through which to buy tickets. Most agents also provide car rentals, hotel bookings and travel insurance.

Prospects

  • Travel retail remains undeveloped and is expected to grow slowly between 2009 and 2014 with a 2% CAGR in value terms. It is predicted to generate value sales of CFAF6 billion by the end of the forecast period.

                                                • Broker reports
                                                • Online databases
                                                • The financial, business and mainstream press

Accessing sources is only the first step. The ability to interpret and reconcile often conflicting information across multiple sources is a key aspect of the added value we provide.

                                                Store checks

Store checks are an integral part of our methods for product industries. Carried out on the ground across a relevant mix of channels, the information gained provides first-hand insights into the products we are researching, specifically:

                                                • Place: We track products in all relevant channels, selective and mass, store and non-store
                                                • Product: What are innovations in products, pack sizes and formats?
                                                • Price: What are brand price variations across channels, how do private label’s prices compare to those of branded goods?
                                                • Promotion: What are marketing and merchandising trends, offers, discounts and tie-ins?

Findings are cross-referenced with brand share data analysis. The results, combined with the findings of desk research, provide a strong basis for identifying key areas of questioning to take forward into our trade survey.

                                                Trade survey

Interaction with global players at corporate HQ and regional levels is complemented by unique local data and insights from our in-country trade surveys around the world. Through the high profile of the Euromonitor International brand, we are able to talk directly to a wide range of sources and therefore inform our analysis with the knowledge and opinions of the leading operators in the market.

                                                Trade surveys allow us to:

                                                • Fill gaps in available published data per company
                                                • Generate a consensus view of the size, structure and strategic direction of the category
                                                • Access year-in-progress data where published sources are out of date
                                                • Evaluate the experts’ views on current trends and market developments

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. We also interview desk research sources: industry associations; study groups; and third party observers from the trade and financial press.

Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. This dialogue enhances both parties’ understanding of the local market. The scope and reach of our trade survey also serves to eliminate bias (intentional and unintentional) from any single source.

                                                Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

                                                Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

                                                Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.

                                                Market analysis

Another integral part of all our research programmes is that all Euromonitor International data is accompanied by clear written analysis. From a research perspective, this explains and substantiates data findings. From a client perspective, this offers unique insights into local consumption trends, routes to market, brand preferences, channel dynamics and future trends.

Our country level analysis also provides invaluable input into the ability of our central industry specialist teams to marry local insights with strategic conclusions on the direction of the market regionally and globally.
