EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Italians are keen on short breaks and “bridges”

In 2010 almost one half of Italians had at least one short holiday during the year. Italians have a passion for weekend breaks. These “stress breaks" are becoming increasingly short and they are ideal for experiencing different places, cost less and require shorter travel times. DINKS/SINKS (Dual Income with No Kids/Single Income with No Kids) are the main targets for city-based short breaks to European cities, which have a special appeal due to their attractions, cuisines and shopping opportunities.

Another rubbish crisis in Naples

At the end of 2010 Naples experienced another “rubbish crisis”. The dramatic waste disposal emergency was due to the mismanagement of the waste cycle in the city and its surrounding areas. Naples’ waste emergency negatively influenced inbound tourism to the city and to Italy. The image of the country as a tourist destination suffered among foreigners since the Italian authorities seem unable to resolve the prolonged waste emergency. In 2010 there were initiatives aimed at renewing the image of Naples in Eastern and Northern Europe.

Low cost holidays

The economic crisis affected many Italian families. In the last years of the review period, there has been an increasing demand for “value for money”, with consumers carefully evaluating the value of services on which they spend their money. This has led to a boom in demand for low cost carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet, but also the growing popularity of low cost accommodation and travel services. Italians are very price sensitive and they look hard for the lowest prices, while paying increased attention to the quality of the services.

L’Aquila earthquake

A devastating earthquake hit Abruzzo, particularly L’Aquila, in 2009, claiming 300 lives and making 60,000 people homeless. Tourism in the region was particularly affected and in 2010 several projects aiming at resurrecting the tourism economy of the region were launched. For example, the administration in Abruzzo allocated funds for projects focusing on sports and nature tourism. Meanwhile, the province of Pescara launched a promotional campaign to support low cost airlines operating from Abruzzo International Airport. Moreover, “the American” - a film starring George Clooney - was filmed in Abruzzo with the specific purpose of attracting tourists to the region.

Internet transactions gain ground

The penetration of the internet in the Italian travel and tourism industry has historically been lower than in other European countries, but it is improving. The boom of low cost carriers has helped to develop the usage of the internet among Italian tourists. As Italians become more used to online transactions, internet penetration is set to increase, with tourists increasingly surfing the web to find the cheapest available holidays. The development of mobile internet technologies and m-payment systems are expected to boost online sales of travel and tourism products and services in the forecast period.

  • Many Italians that could not afford to take holidays because of deteriorating economic conditions decided to visit tourist attractions. In many cases, they chose to go to concerts performed in nearby cities or visited theme/amusement parks. Another reason for the increasing interest in tourist attractions was the offer of concerts and live performances which have multiplied in Italy during the review period. In the past, only big cities such as Rome and Milan were chosen by artists for concerts and musicals. However, live performances are now offered by most of Italian provinces.

Short breaks, often made by “adding” one or two days to the weekend, were increasingly taken by Italians during the year. Bergamo, Pescara, Perugia, Brindisi, Lamezia Terme, Parma and Treviso all invested in extensions to their airports.   • 2010 was a peculiar year in the sense that travel retail experienced many changes and new trends. In 2010 there was an ongoing process that saw tour operators increasingly engaged in selling products directly via the internet (instead of passing through travel agencies). Meanwhile, travel agencies were increasingly taking over functions typical of tour operators, namely the creation of package holidays to be sold to their customers. Thus, the internet is leading to hybrid activity in travel retail in Italy.

  • The leader and fastest growing company in 2010 is Welcome Travel Group, one of the few travel agents to record an increase in sales. Welcome Travel Group registered a 13% increase in current value sales to reach EUR1.1 billion. This represented a share increase of one percentage point to reach 6%. The main reasons for the company’s positive performance is its commercial partnership with Alpitour SpA, a focus on business and incentive targets, which are generally more affluent than leisure tourists, and network enlargement.

PROSPECTS

  • While online travel agencies will continue to build travel activity and traffic, traditional players will need to cater to the changing demands of travellers in order to compete. In order to survive the decreasing use of traditional travel agencies, several smaller firms are expected to merge or join retail chains during the forecast period. Mergers and franchising will be used to help expand client bases, cut costs, share technologies, combine niche specialities, and prepare for the eventual recovery of the travel and tourism industry.

In building our composite industry view, we engage with a variety of personnel in key players at all points of the supply chain: materials suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service operators. Our objective is to engage in conversation with trade sources in which we exchange ideas and views on the industry, sharing our work-in-progress findings on supply/demand dynamics and potential. Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

At a country level, in line with local reporting requirements, we access annual accounts, national-specific company databases and local company websites. These are all invaluable sources as we build a view of each domestic player’s size and position within very specific categories of the industry.

Forecasts

Data projections and future performance analysis are key elements of Euromonitor International’s market intelligence. Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.
