Mexico signs a National Agreement for Tourism

In 2011 the Mexican Government, together with representative associations from the private sector, signed a national agreement for the promotion and development of the travel and tourism industry. The agreement consists of 100 actions to be taken by several governmental institutions and industry players during the period 2011-2018. Amongst the main guidelines established by this agreement are the acceleration of tourism infrastructure plans, more credit facilities for industry players, improvements in terms of air transportation connectivity and the diversification of incoming tourists. The follow-up of this agreement is expected to boost the travel and tourism industry over the forecast period.

Mexican airlines increase their geographical coverage

In 2011 national airlines increased their capacity and geographic coverage by expanding their fleets and increasing the number of destinations and flight frequency. In addition to national destinations, airlines also expanded their coverage by adding destinations in the US. As a result, consumers enjoyed a range of alternatives in terms of price, schedules and destinations. The dynamism was explained in part by Mexicana’s exit during the second half of 2010.

Mexico takes actions to improve its foreign image

The constant mentions of violent incidents, related to the fight against the drug cartels in Mexico, have deteriorated the foreign perception of the country. This has been reflected in the performance of the travel and tourism industry over the review period. In 2011 there were several efforts made by the Government and the private sector to improve the foreign image of Mexico and promote it as tourism destination. During the year there were many interesting marketing strategies, such as the branding of 300 taxis in London in November 2011 with landscapes of Mexico and the slogan “Mexico Today”. These efforts are expected to yield results over the forecast period, improving the performance of the industry.

Chained hotels focus on expanding their geographical coverage

Hotel infrastructure in Mexico is highly concentrated in sun and beach destinations and a couple of major cities. The rest of the country still has great potential for the development of infrastructure and travel accommodation services. During 2011 operators of chained hotels expanded their reach, opening new outlets in different regions of the country. The chain City Express Hoteles opened a net total of nine extra outlets in 2011, while the GBO Wyndham Worldwide Corp opened eight and the NBO Corporación Milenium opened seven. This allowed chained hotels to increase their shares but also to create partnerships with other industry players, such as the alliance between City Express and the bank BBVA Bancomer, whereby clients of the bank had access to discounts for City Express travel accommodation services. By expanding their geographic coverage chained hotels improve their negotiating leverage and offer consistency to their clients. All these improvements are expected to support the positive performance of chained hotels over the forecast period.

Mexico aims to diversify the origin of incoming tourists

In 2011 the Mexican Government made a concerted effort to attract incoming tourists from regions other than North America and Europe. According to the Ministry of Tourism the country’s strategy is to attract Chinese, Russian, Japanese and Brazilian tourists. During 2011, in addition to promotional campaigns, Mexico improved its visa processing mechanism, reducing the time to an average of 72 hours in every consulate and embassy. It also encouraged the opening of a new direct flight from Beijing-Mexico and allowed Brazilians with US visas or permanent residency in Japan, the UK, the Schengen zone or Canada to visit Mexico without further requirements.

  • In 2011 the car rental business observed a small recovery, explained primarily by the upturn of the country’s economy. This was reflected in an increase in domestic tourism flows of 4% compared to the previous year.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2011 two brands led the car rental category. Avis, operated by Avis Budget Group Inc, was the leader with a 15% value share, followed by Hertz (The Hertz Corp), which was responsible for 14% of value sales. The success of these brands is explained by their strong positioning and high degrees of consumer awareness, a result of their wider presence over a long period.

PROSPECTS

  • The forecast period is expected to see a stronger performance by the car rental category. This growth could be driven, amongst other factors, by the promotion of more domestic tourism destinations that are a couple of hours far from main cities. This will encourage travellers to use rental cars in order to reach these places, after flying to the nearest airport. Growth is expected at a CAGR of 3% both in terms of transaction volumes and constant value sales.

  • 2011 saw a significant reorganisation among spa operators in the country. Spa services have gained popularity and are being specifically demanded by consumers. Chained hotels have assigned specific areas to develop their spa facilities and there are several independent hotels focusing exclusively on the spa concept, such as La Casa de los Arboles in Zacualpan, Morelos and Sitio Sagrado in Tepoztlán, Morelos.

  • In 2011 domestic tourism observed positive growth, explained mostly by a second year of economic recovery. In terms of volume there was an increase of 4% while domestic tourists spent 5% more during the year.

  • Over the forecast period domestic tourism is expected to maintain its positive growth trend, with a CAGR of 3% in terms of number of trips and a constant value CAGR of 4% in terms of spending. Domestic tourism represents one of the main sources of economic development in Mexico; the category is likely to observe continuous advertising efforts promoting the different destinations in the country in order to encourage domestic tourism.   • In 2011 the Federal Government launched an important promotional campaign intended to improve the country’s image around the world. The campaign included the “Mexico Today” campaign in Europe, the Mexico Taxi Project in the US and the Royal Tour showcase, also in the US. This decision was taken in order to counteract the observed reactions from travellers and foreign companies that were choosing alternative destinations to Mexico. Cruise lines stopped visiting destinations such as Acapulco and Mazatlán, while “spring breakers” from the US, who usually visit Mexico, were advised to choose a different destination in order to avoid any risks.

  • The Federal Government declared 2011 would be a year of tourism. Tourism promotion became one of the main lines of action during the year and there were several campaigns promoting domestic destinations and tourist attractions; campaigns included billboards, printed and broadcast advertisements, as well as interaction with consumers through social networks. Promotional campaigns, together with a second year of economic recovery, were the main drivers of growth for the tourist attractions category during 2011. As a result the growth in both current value and volume terms, growth in 2011 was faster than the review period average.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period the tourist attractions category is expected to observe moderate growth, with constant value sales set to rise at a CAGR of 2%, while the number of visitors is set to rise at a CAGR of 1%. This moderate growth is likely to be the result of the global economic uncertainty, which is set to be reflected in the contraction of tourist spending over the forecast period. Visiting tourist attractions is a non-essential activity that can be put on hold until there is an increase in consumer confidence.

Transportation in Mexico - Category Analysis

  • In 2011 transportation by bus/coach accounted for value sales of Mx$307 billion, representing 72% of total transportation value sales. Most travellers prefer this type of transport because it offers comfort, efficiency and affordable prices. The Mexican bus network is one of the largest in the world and it offers connectivity to many cities and towns across the country. In 2011 the bus system carried over 588 million passengers, which is significantly higher than the 48 million passengers carried by air carriers, the second largest mode of transport during 2011.

  • In terms of air transportation, the leading company in value terms was AeroMexico with sales of Mx$28,568 million in 2011. AeroMexico accounted for 26% of total air transportation value sales. After the exit of Mexicana during the second half of 2010, AeroMexico opened several new routes and increased flight frequency in order to meet the demand left unattended by Mexicana. Compared to the previous year, AeroMexico observed a 12% increase in value sales. AeroMexico was followed by ABC Aerolineas SA de CV, Vuela Cía de Aviación and Aeroenlaces Nacionales SA de CV, operators of the low cost carriers Interjet, Volaris and Viva Aerobus with value shares of 6%, 5% and 4% respectively.

PROSPECTS

  • The transportation category is expected to observe sustained growth over the forecast period, with an anticipated constant value CAGR of 3%. By 2016 the category is expected to record constant value sales of Mx$500 billion. This growth is likely to be driven by the increase in connectivity in the country as a result of infrastructure developments. This is set to boost travel and tourism and commercial activities, which in turn will support growth in transportation over the forecast period.

Travel Accommodation in Mexico - Category Analysis

  • In 2011 average daily rates declined slightly, which together with greater economic stability resulted in higher occupancy rates; this represented the main driver of revenue growth. Within the hotels category, chained hotels saw the fastest growth in 2011 with an increase of 4% in value terms and a 9% rise in outlet numbers. Operators of chained hotels have invested heavily in travel accommodation infrastructure in a bid to grow their share by increasing their presence in the country.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Corporación Milenium (with the GBO InterContinental Hotels Group Plc) remained the leading player within the hotels category in 2011. It operates 127 outlets and over 19,700 rooms. Its brands in Mexico are Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental, Staybridge Suites and Indigo. The largest share of outlets is under the Holiday Inn brand, which benefits from North American tourists who recognise, rely on and show a preference for the brand. However, during 2011 Corporación Milenium opened eight outlets under the Holiday Inn Express brand. This brand offers convenient locations and competitive rates. The expansion of this brand is part of the group’s strategy to compete with similar brands such as City Express (City Express Hoteles) and One Hotels (Grupo Posadas de México).

PROSPECTS

  • The number of outlets, bed nights, rooms and constant value sales are all expected to rise at a CAGR of 3% over the forecast period. The performance of this category will be driven by the positive growth of domestic and inbound tourism.

  • The travel retail category observed a 4% increase in current value sales in 2011, supported by the economic stability in the country that allowed consumers to increase their spending and travel more. During the review period the major trend impacting travel retail was the shift towards online bookings and sales. In 2011 online sales reached Mx$5,077 million. Compared to 2010, this represents an increase of 28% in value terms. However, offline sales still account for the largest proportion of sales, with a share of 84% of the total value sales.

  • Despegar.com Inc led the travel retail category as a whole with a share of 8% in 2011, representing a rise of half a percentage point from 2010. It was followed by American Express Co with 7%. The positive performance of Despegar was boosted mostly by the expansion of internet access in the country. According to AMIPCI in 2009 there was a 22.7% of internet penetration while in 2010 it reached 31%. Regarding the performance of American Express, the company’s rewards programme boosted its travel services’ business during 2011.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, the travel retail category is expected to observe positive growth. The anticipated CAGRs are 2% and 1% in terms of constant value sales and number of outlets respectively. Growth is set to be driven by the expansion of online travel agencies. Online constant value sales are expected to reach Mx$5,848.3 million in 2016.

Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested.
