Political stability promotes the private development of travel and tourism

The political and security situation in Niger has improved following peaceful elections in 2011 and the inauguration of the country’s new president. The Nigerien capital Niamey is being promoted by the government as a safe and secure city and it is hoped that this will help change the negative image of Niger in the international press. Another tool to promote travel and tourism in the country is the government incentives which are being offered to private companies wanting to invest in the transportation and travel accommodation categories. Many investors from China are now cooperating with the government of Niger because of this.

Airline expansion creates new connections

Air transportation remains the key contributor to overall transportation value sales in Niger. Air traffic mostly derives from international companies Air France and Royal Air Maroc, although new entries such as Turkish Airlines in 2012 are gradually resulting in increases in the number of air routes to the country. In November 2013, Ethiopian Airlines also resumed flights between Addis Ababa and Niamey. The airline began serving the route with four weekly flights, allowing passengers to join connections to Cairo, Mumbai, Guangzhou, Dubai, Riyadh, Khartoum, Hong Kong, Jeddah, Beirut, Washington DC and Toronto

Rising business tourism drives the development of high-class hotel accommodation

There is a high number of 4-star and 5-star hotels in Niger, although there is also a lack of experienced and trained people to staff these hotels and this means that Niger’s hotels do not generally meet international standards. Demand for high-quality services in travel accommodation is pushing the government to pay attention to the services standards at its high-class hotels, with some existing hotels being renovated in recent years. The Ministry of Tourism is also offering various incentives in order to encourage private investors to develop travel accommodation and, as a result, one of the top hotels in Niamey, Hotel Gaweye, began to be operated under private management during in 2013 in an effort to improve the quality of service on offer.

High potential for the development of eco-tourism in Niger

Niger is a country rich in natural beauty and this could make it a perfect destination for ecotourism. Along the river Niger, there are national parks such as the famous W-Park, the administration of which is shared between Niger, Benin and Burkina Faso, and which aims to protect the fauna and endangered wildlife of western Africa. Unlawful hunting and poaching have nonetheless become serious issues in the park, issues which the government of Niger has so far been unable to address. At the same time, there are vast areas in Niger which could easily be used for safari tourism, with animals such as giraffes, lions and elephants able to attract tourists to the country.
