Travel accommodation sector in need of upgrading
Numerous travel accommodation establishments are in need of a facelift in order to attract visitors as well as to boost occupancy rates. Many hotel outlets have suffered from underinvestment due to years of socio-political unrest in the country and many incoming tourists are still concerned whether Zimbabwe is a safe country to visit. There is also a huge gap in the hospitality sector because of the general lack of budget hotels in the country, many travellers cannot afford the pricing of the existing hotels, so there is a need for lower-priced facilities.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority attempts to attract tour operators
In a bid to enhance the development of travel and tourism in 2012, the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) was involved in negotiations with the tourism authorities in Zambia with a view to enable free movement of tour operators between the two countries. This should provide a first step to encouraging more foreign tour operators from all over the world to begin operating in Zimbabwe as many left when the security situation become too risky for tourists.
Travel and tourism diversifies and attempts to attract more visitors
The Zimbabwean Government is working hard to try and attract tourists from countries such as India and China, as well as from other long-haul source destinations. It is striving to attract three million overseas visitors by 2017 and it plans to participate in all major international travel and tourism shows. The government is also engaging the international media to assist in projecting a more positive image of the country.
Single Visa for EAC
The Government of Zimbabwe is working closely with other members of the Southern African Development Community to create a single visa for the region. Such initiatives will result in a one-stop border entry and help to boost tourist flows across borders in the region. Zimbabwe, with its multi-currency regime, will significantly benefit from this new type of visa. The long awaited single visa for the East African Community has faced delays in its implementation due to a lack of consensus over fee collection but is a priority for 2013 according to the EAC Secretariat.
Strong growth expected as tourists return to Zimbabwe
With a more stable political environment, more foreign investors will be encouraged to invest in travel accommodation as tourists return to Zimbabwe after years of it being a virtual civil war zone. This will lead to an upgrade of the tourism facilities available in the country and will help to boost prices, which spiralled down under the uncertain political conditions.
