  • Robotic vacuum cleaners continued to grow faster than any other category in terms of volume and value in 2013, by 3% and 4%, respectively. This is due in part to increased competition, especially from Neato Robotics. While iRobot remains the market leader, there are smaller players entering that are reaching price points where iRobot does not compete. Consumers are not disposing of their traditional vacuum cleaner; rather they are having robotic vacuum cleaners as a secondary helper that can maintain the cleanliness of an apartment or home. Uprights dominate, with around half of the entire vacuum cleaner market, but they are being complemented with robotic vacuum cleaners.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • TTI Floor Care remains the market leader with 32% of total vacuum cleaner volume in 2013. The company’s brands include Oreck, Dirt Devil and Hoover, all of which are well-recognised brands within American households. The company has a long history of high quality vacuum cleaners and this longevity appeals to those shopping for a new vacuum. In second place is Bissell, with a 21% volume share. Both brands increased their share slightly in 2013, in a mature market.

PROSPECTS

  • Robotic vacuum cleaners will lead the way,as more consumers wish to ease the daily maintenance of their homes. While many people do not intend to replace their traditional cleaning regimes with a robotic vacuum, as the appliances become more powerful, the use of traditional vacuum cleaners will play less of a role. Robotic vacuum cleaners are projected to grow in volume by a 4% CAGR between 2013 and 2018.
