About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Paediatric vitamins and dietary supplements is a highly fragmented category with many competitors, which in 2014 generated fierce competition to gain value share and be the most popular amongst Mexican consumers. After seeing a poor performance in 2013, manufacturers implemented strategies to reposition their products and convince consumers of their benefits. These actions led the category to see a strong positive performance, with a current value increase of 9% to reach MXN676 million. Parents are showing more concern about the role of nutrition in the development of their children. This is one of the main reasons to give them vitamins, to compensate for the stressful lifestyles and poor eating habits they may have.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2014, the three leading companies in vitamins and dietary supplements accounted for a 37% share of value sales, which remained fairly stable in terms of individual shares. Herbalife Internacional de México was by far the leading competitor with a 24% value share in 2014, followed by Farmacias Similares with 7% and Boehringer Ingelheim Promeco with 6%. The distribution strategies of Herbalife have given the company strong positive results over the years, and in 2014 the company consolidated its position due to the commercial distribution agreement with Farmacias Benavides. Farmacias Similares has a strong position amongst Mexican consumers due to its lower prices for generic products and the constant launch of new products. Its strategy of low prices, along with an affordable medical service in almost every store, has resulted in a captive market. In 2014 it started to transform some of its pharmacies into parapharmacies in order to offer more products and attract more customers. Boehringer Ingelheim Promeco owns some of the strongest and most reliable brands for adults and children, Pharmaton, Pharmaton Matruelle and Pharmaton Kids, which are positioned amongst consumers as highly effective, with the support of scientific research, despite the decrease in publicity and advertising.

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period vitamins and dietary supplements is expected to see a value CAGR of 4% at constant 2014 prices, to reach MXN21.2 billion in 2019. The increase in the older population due to the increase of life expectancy in Mexico will be the main driver of growth in this category. The younger population is becoming more conscious about the benefits of a health prevention culture in order to have fewer health problems as they get older. This culture will be transmitted to their children, which are an important target and an emerging market for the development of new products. Specialised products for specific needs, such as beauty, joint health, skin care, hair care, or for people with diabetes, are likely to be drivers of growth.
