About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Mexican Government ran strong media advertising campaigns to prevent the main diseases in Mexico such as diabetes, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, heart and cardiovascular disease. Public and private clinics and hospitals also support these campaigns and this communication influenced people from every socioeconomic level to buy these products. These campaigns for prevention heavily influenced growth rates of many vitamins and dietary supplements, particularly calcium supplements. These public campaigns recommend vitamins and dietary supplement consumption which makes people of all ages consume the products, and people became more conscious about health care and prevention culture since they were children. It is therefore expected that the number of consumers will increase as the children get older and have their own children.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Vitamins and dietary supplements was led by Herbalife Internacional de México in 2013 with a 31% value share and 14% value growth. Even though its product prices are similar to its competitors, its individual distributors net and nutritional clubs help support sales because they can reach more consumers and make them try its products as they buy them. Ranked second was Farmacias Similares with a 7% share, which was a decline of almost half a percentage point compared to 2012 edition. Third was Boehringer Ingelheim Promeco with 6%, due to media advertising campaigns and activities in retail stores.

PROSPECTS

  • People’s concerns about the main diseases in Mexico will be a key driver for the growth of vitamins and dietary supplements in the forecast period. Diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, and heart problems are growing, as are related diseases, and most of them can be avoided by consuming vitamins and dietary supplements as long as healthy food.
