  • In 2014 Ukrainians were displeased to observe the continuing double-digit growth of medicine unit prices, including vitamins and dietary supplements. The trend is beneficial for value sales dynamics (20% in current terms) and overall UAH3.1 billion was spent on vitamins and dietary supplements in 2014. However, unlike in some OTC categories, vitamins and dietary supplements’ volume sales are usually not largely affected or even register positive dynamics, given their status as essential products. Ukrainians have eventually realised the importance of preventative medication, and therefore keep vitamins and dietary supplements on their list of important purchases.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • In 2014 Unipharm Inc took the lead in vitamins and dietary supplements with its well-known Vitrum range, which allowed the company to gain an overall 7% share of the category’s value sales. Amway Ukraine TOV, previously the leader, lost share when the economic situation in the country became worse, as its products’ prices started discouraging a growing number of consumers, who in turn shifted to more cheaper brands. The Vitrum range appeals with a variety of combination formulas (eg, energy, beauty).

PROSPECTS

  • Over the forecast period, Ukrainians are likely to demonstrate a growing interest in preventative medication as a way of becoming healthier and more productive. A strive to economise will be backing the trend as well as it is cheaper to buy vitamins and dietary supplements rather than spend on more expensive OTC medicines. As a result, the category is anticipated to maintain positive sales dynamics with volume sales eventually up by the end of the forecast period, when consumer spending power is likely to strengthen most.
