The One Million KG Challenge and a refined Lose to Win programme, both events the brainchild of the Health Promotion Board (HPB), were introduced in early 2014. The One Million KG Challenge incorporated exercise with healthy living, with the aim of the nation losing a collective one million kg by 2016. The campaign was supported by health and wellness kiosks, encouragement stickers promoting a healthier lifestyle in residential areas, and peer-to-peer mentoring. Prizes and health kits were also distributed to further entice Singaporeans to sign up for the campaign.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Herbalife International Singapore Pte Ltd continued to retain its strong lead in weight management, recording a 33% value share in 2014. It held a 24 percentage point lead over its closest rival, second-ranked Avenza Pte Ltd. Herbalife International Singapore Pte Ltd was especially prominent because of its dominance in meal replacement slimming, where it dominates with a 70% current value share, as well as its presence in weight loss supplements where it leads with a 20% share.

PROSPECTS

  • The weight management category is expected to register a 3% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period, to reach SGD75 million in 2019. The growth rate is set to be relatively stable, supplemented by the positive growth of sports nutrition. In addition, health-conscious consumers will continue to use weight management products, especially if the trend towards increased body consciousness continues to influence them.
