Executive Summary

May 2018
PROSPECTS
Convenience supports category’s ongoing development

The demand for quick and convenient and food options continued to boost sales of 100% home delivery/takeaway in 2017. In an attempt to capitalise on this trend, many consumer foodservice players introduced services such as home delivery and online ordering, during the review period.

Consumers turn to home delivery/takeaway due to good value

100% home delivery/takeaway remains a relatively small category accounting for less than 1% of all consumer foodservice outlets in 2017. With sales largely limited to pizza, there is a lack of variety to stimulate increased consumer interest.

UberEATS expands into Durban

The entry of UberEATS into South Africa in 2016 poses a threat to the growth of 100% home delivery/takeaway, with this service enabling operators such as KFC to offer home delivery services. The app has already been downloaded over 500,000 times in South Africa, with an average of 10,000 downloads a week.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Domino’s Pizza goes from strength to strength

Domino’s Pizza continued to see dynamic double-digit current value growth in 2017, with it benefiting from its expanding network of stores, strong marketing and innovative products. For example, in 2017 the company added its Feast Fixer tool to its online ordering system which enables groups to easily calculate how much pizza is required when placing the order.

Pizza Hut builds brand loyalty and awareness

In second place, Pizza Hut also continued to grow its value share in 2017. Having re-entered South Africa in 2014, the chain now has almost 60 stores nationwide, with it benefiting from a more focused approach.

Butlers retains third place

Butlers is the only other significant player with the rest of the competition being fragmented. Butlers is predominantly concentrated in Cape Town, particularly within developed urban areas, with it offering free delivery.
