Adult incontinence clocked a sharp acceleration in current value growth during 2016. The ageing population of Thailand remains a serious social issue facing the country, with the country’s fertility rate falling to just 1.5 births per woman in 2015. Consequently, the World Bank has reported that 11% of the Thai population, which is around 7.5 million people, are now aged 65 years old and above. This also means that Thailand has the highest proportion of people within this age range in the Asia Pacific region, which supported strong demand for adult incontinence products in 2016.
Leading player DSG International (Thailand) Plc clocked the strongest increase in value share in adult incontinence in 2016, increasing by one percentage point to reach 68%, thereby consolidating its leadership in the category. The very well-established presence of its Certainty brand managed to earn it the trust of consumers in the quality of products on offer. In addition, the brand’s wide distribution network also means that consumers have easy access to the brand.
Adult incontinence is expected to record positive value growth in constant 2016 terms over the forecast period, although the 11% value CAGR expected in the category at constant 2016 prices are set to be slower than the 12% value growth recorded in the category at constant prices in 2016. Over the forecast period, Thailand’s population is set to continue ageing rapidly, with the numbers of those aged 65 years old and above set to reach 17 million, around 25% of the country’s total population by 2040. The birth rate in Thailand is expected to continue slowing down, with consumers choosing to focus on their careers and delaying their marriage and childbirth plans. This, in turn, is set to boost demand for adult incontinence products as the condition is rampant among Thailand’s elderly population.
