Volume sales in Russian air care continued to decline in 2021. The pandemic has seen Russian consumers spending more time at home than usual, encouraging them to spend on products that help improve the home environment, such as the various air-freshening products available in air care.
One of the main trends visible in air care at the moment is the fact that consumers are actively switching from aerosol/spray air fresheners to slow-release air fresheners. In addition, a trend prevalent during the pandemic has been air care products with antibacterial properties, which were not available on the market prior to COVID-19 arriving in Russia, but were proving popular during the pandemic.
Air care sales are fairly evenly distributed between international and local brands, particularly in spray/aerosol air fresheners. The major brand owners try to compete via brand reputation, quality and constant promotions.
Air care is expected to record a marginally negative CAGR in volume terms over the forecast period. Purchasing power remained under pressure for the majority of consumers at the start of the forecast period, not helped by the pandemic’s economic impact.
While the dominant spray/aerosol air fresheners category will be stagnating, some of the more modern products, such as gel and electric air fresheners, will be recording positive growth. Such categories tend to be dominated by international players and are considered more innovative.
After what will hopefully be an end to COVID-19 restrictions, the volume sales performance in car air fresheners is expected to improve slightly from 2022. Due to home seclusion as well as mobility and travel restrictions implemented during 2020 and 2021 in order to slow the spread of COVID-19, people were using their cars less, reducing the need for new car air fresheners.
