COVID-19 stimulated a high demand for analgesics in Belarus, particularly acetaminophen. Medical professionals have been advising patients to take paracetamol in case of high fever.
Consumers in Belarus tend to be quite health-conscious and cautious about limiting their intake of analgesics and other pharmaceuticals. Rather, many Belarusians pay greater attention to their health, diet and natural remedies, which could also explain why there is a low death rate from COVID-19 in the country.
State-owned leader in analgesics, Borisovskiy Zavod Meditsinkikh Preparatov OAO, gains a strong advantage due to the fact it is the only local producer of acetaminophen. As noted, the Belarus government is strong in promoting domestically produced analgesics over those which are imported, thus giving the player its additional advantage.
Domestic players will continue to maintain their competitive advantage over the forecast period, due to being backed by the state and strongly supported over imported products in analgesics. Borisovskiy Zavod Meditsinkikh Preparatov OAO is expected to maintain its leading position due to its myriad advantages already mentioned, but there is also scope for other domestic players to gain shares and heighten competition amongst themselves.
Adult combined analgesics is an area showing scope for development, as seen with the launch of Trialgin from Pharmland JV Ltd. The fact that it has antihistamine properties along with being an antipyretic agent, means it is a drug which is well-suited to treating colds and influenza and other infectious and inflammatory diseases, along with offering pain relief.
Topical analgesics/anaesthetic continues to see small growth, so this is an area to still explore. Although not as notable a category as systemic analgesics, topical analgesics/anaesthetic is also much more fragmented overall, with only small percentage points between players, as opposed to one major player holding a share above and beyond all others.
