Executive Summary

PROSPECTS
Analgesics relies on price increases for value growth

Analgesics remains a large and, in value sales terms, growing consumer health category with a wide assortment. Analgesics in Belarus are frequently used by consumers of all ages due to growing stress, pollution and the desire to eliminate pain.

Self-treatment is high though product-awareness is low

The lack of consumer-awareness of the effects of certain analgesics and of the key differences between the various types of analgesics encourages consumers to seek advice from pharmacists, asking for the best type of analgesic for specific pains. This dependence on the advice of pharmacists is expected to remain strong during the forecast period as low consumer-awareness of the various types of analgesics is set to continue.

Local and inexpensive products will benefit from price-cautious consumers

Domestic drug production continues to develop thanks to government support for the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, interest in less expensive products has been boosted by the economising trend, which remained a trend among consumers in 2018.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Domestic analgesics have the edge

The competitive landscape remains fragmented in analgesics with many domestic and foreign products present in local pharmacies. However, domestic company Borisovskiy Zavod Meditsinkikh Preparatov OAO remained the leader in systemic analgesics.

Achieving a regular store presence is key amid heated competition

With analgesics being frequently used, the economising trend encourages consumers (medium- to low-income consumers, retirees and others) to pay greater attention to unit prices, leading to a switch from imported products to domestic generics. However, there is intense competition between domestic generic products.

Saturation makes further significant product launches unlikely

There were several local NPDs in 2018. Profen Express (systemic adult ibuprofen) was launched in August 2018, followed by Amantis Med (topical analgesic) and Ibuprofen Plus (gel) in December 2018 by leading local company Belmedpreparaty RUP.
