Self-medication trend grows as consumers skip visits to the doctor

In 2018, increasing self-medication continued to positively impact most consumer health categories. Analgesics in particular continued to benefit from this trend as many local consumers are trying to avoid trips to the doctor and other medical professionals.

Systemic analgesics continues to outperform topical analgesics/anaesthetic

Systemic analgesics, which are typically used to relieve pain caused by chronic or acute conditions such as menstrual pain, migraine, arthritis, cardiovascular ailments or other pre- or post-operative conditions, continued to outperform topical analgesics/anaesthetic in 2018. Unlike topical analgesics/anaesthetic, which suffers from a lack of brands and products, systemic analgesics benefits from a significant number of brands in several strong categories, as well as smaller ones.

Growing popularity of paediatric analgesics

In 2018, paediatric combination products posted the strongest performance in analgesics. One of the main reasons for this was the category’s low sales base.

Alkaloid AD Skopje continues to dominate analgesics

The domestic company Alkaloid AD Skopje continued to dominate analgesics in 2018, even though its value share declined slightly. The company’s leading position can be attributed to the combined strength of its Caffetin, Analgin and Paracetamol brands.

Bayer Pharma and Krka Farma the leading international manufacturers

In 2018, two international companies, Bayer Pharma and Krka Farma, ranked second and third, respectively. Bayer Pharma further increased its value share, while the share of Krka Farma remained stable, largely as a result of strong competition.

Alkaloid’s strong value share helps domestic companies to dominate analgesics

As a result of the strength of Alkaloid AD Skopje, domestic companies continued to dominate analgesics in 2018. Beyond Alkaloid, the category is becoming more fragmented, although several prominent international players such as Bayer Pharma, Krka Farma and Allergan command higher value shares than the remaining international players, all of which are frontrunners when it comes to new product development and innovation.
