Apparel and footwear retailers in Slovakia need to adopt more digital innovation in order to lure consumers to stores at a time when the prominence of internet retailing is rising. Although leading retailers have an online presence, with C&A Mode being the latest retailer to launch e-shop in 2018, there is a lack of digital and in-store innovation among local and international brands.
E-commerce continues to grow in popularity in Slovakia. Web-only players are becoming increasingly popular also in apparel and footwear, with companies like Alibaba, Wish and eBay growing their sales share at a rapid pace.
Since 2013, the Pepco brand has seen unprecedented expansion in the apparel and footwear retail landscape in Slovakia. In the space of five years, Pepco Slovakia opened over 90 stores across the whole country.
International companies are expected to maintain their position as they are already well-established and operate a significant number of stores in the country. Unlike local companies, local players are quick to respond to customers’ needs and adopt new technologies to attract consumers.
While major players represented only a small percentage of outlets in the channel in 2017, they accounted for almost half of overall value sales within apparel and footwear specialist retailers. Smaller independent companies thus represented the majority of outlets.
