Event Name: Vitafoods Europe
Date: 6-8 May, 2014
Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Event Description: Vitafoods Europe is the leading ingredients and raw materials event for the nutraceutical, dietary supplements and functional food and drinks industries. It's the key place to meet over 700 exhibiting companies, source ingredient solutions, develop product solutions and network with your peers.
Euromonitor International is pleased to be presenting in both this year’s conference as well as a free seminar in the Nutra Insights Hub on the exhibition floor and as a panellist on the Vitafoods Live! stage.
Diana Cowland, Senior Health and Wellness Analyst, will give two presentations
First Presentation Date and Time: 6th May at 16:40
Presentation Title: Extend Full Health by 7 years: Target the Ageing
Location: Module B3 – Market for the Ageing
Presentation Description: Fortified/functional (FF) food and drink sales rose by 25% over 2008-2013 to reach US$267.6 billion, with the bulk of this gain achieved during the early part of the period. Growth was underpinned by a greater awareness of the health benefits gained from food and drink, higher disposable incomes and a desire to live longer.
However, there is a difference of at least seven years across all regions between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy. To help revitalise FF products, manufacturers should target the ageing and close this gap. This presentation explores the numerous opportunities in cardiovascular health, bone and joint health, brain health and memory and vision health.
Second Presentation Date and Time: 7th May at 11am
Presentation Title: Stevia: Adding Value through Natural – The Resurgence of Reduced Sugar
Location: Nutra Insights Hub
Presentation Description: The presentation will explore stevia-related innovation and its potential in reinvigorating the reduced-sugar category. Stevia’s potential as a weight management ingredient will also be analysed by assessing the rise in reduced sugar carbonate consumption, and hence drop in calorie intake, if just 20% of regular carbonates were reformulated. Diana will explain the extent to which stevia has reached the mass market and the reformulation of conventional products by leading soft drinks players. And finally, discuss technological advances including steviol glycoside blends and further reducing sugar content to 50% to improve the taste profile.
Pannel: Cocoa flavanol science and the potential for better-for-you chocolate
Pannel Time: Tuesday 6 May, 14:30 - 16:00
Location: Vitafoods Live! Located on stand 25035
A healthier chocolate bar is an exciting prospect but does the hype match the reality? Barry Callebaut last year won an EU health claim to say dark chocolate and cocoa beverages made from cocoa from its flavanol-preserving mehtod can contribute to good blood flow. Science has also been mounting linking cocoa flavanols to improved mood and cognition.
However, market analysts say that a cocoa flavanol health claim is unlikely to revolutionise the chocolate industry since milk chocolate is more popular in most markets and indulgence will always be the main purchase incentive. What does the future hold for high cocoa flavanol chocolate?
