On Wednesday 4th November Islington’s volunteers were celebrated at the Volunteer of the Year Awards. We’re thrilled to announce that Alysson Taisson, Business Development Account Manager London, was named Employee Volunteer of the Year for her participation in an employment mentoring programme with Samuel Rhodes School, a school in Islington for children with moderate learning difficulties.
Alysson’s mentee Carla has significant delay in her understanding, communication and ability to learn and can be very shy when meeting someone new. On completion of the formal 10 week mentoring programme Alysson has continued to work with Carla making use of company paid volunteer days and her own time. In October they spent a day at the British Library with one of Alysson’s friends. Of the experience Alysson said “She was very engaging, talking a lot with us, even making friends with my friend. To think she wouldn’t speak to strangers when I first met her…I am amazed by how she has opened up!”
The judging panel recognised Alysson for the time, energy and care she has given to helping Carla to build her self-confidence and to become more independent. Assistant Head Teacher Emily Fitch said “Alysson has supported Carla in her journey towards meaningful employment at a level that was spot-on for her cognitive needs. Many thanks for her dedication.”
