Incorporating simple ingredients, accompanied by limitless varieties of sauces and toppings, and benefitting from simple preparation and cooking methods, pizza is ideally suited for nearly universal appeal.
A format that now represents nearly 5% of global consumer foodservice sales, Euromonitor International’s research shows that the number of pizza delivery and takeaway outlets continue to grow, with the US leading this market, followed by Italy and Brazil.
Despite being an established pizza market, the US will register 4% CAGR growth in pizza 100% home delivery and takeaways in the next five years, driven by the development and adoption of online ordering platforms, as well as continued investment in “clean” ingredient options, which are becoming increasingly popular among consumers across foodservice channels.
In the UK, another saturated pizza market where chains make up an overwhelming 87% of the market, concepts such as Franco Manca, Base+Barley and Pizza Pilgrims have recently emerged offering artisanal pizza with an emphasis on ingredients.
In non-traditional pizza markets, such as Mexico and South Korea, domestic pizza operators are having success by adopting local ingredients and developing speciality combinations that incorporate elements of local cuisine, thus making pizza more palatable to local consumers.
