Brazil falls in-between the previous two World Cup hosts in terms of its demographic trends. The age structure of Brazil’s population is one of its key strengths. In 2014, 32.8% of the population were aged 20-39, contrasting sharply with Germany’s 26.0% in its host year. However, Brazil’s low fertility rate, which unlike 2010’s host South Africa is well below replacement rate, means that the country is going through an ageing process, as can be seen by the narrow base of the population pyramid.
