Ayurveda and Its Growing Influence in Preventative Healthcare in India

November 2020

Growing indulgence, unhealthy lifestyles and high stress levels has resulted in the early onset of diseases in India. More consumers are embodying healthier lifestyles, going back to their roots and seeking products with plant-based and herbal formulations. Furthermore, concerns around consuming artificial chemical compounds and higher scrutiny of product labels have aided the popularity of Ayurveda in preventative healthcare, as Indians are familiar with the concepts and ingredients.

Key Findings

GSK remains the number one global player for consumer health

For the second consecutive year, GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) is the leading company in global consumer health sales. The merger with Pfizer and a strong vitamins and dietary supplements offering solidified the company’s position, while strong sales in the first half of 2020 helped the company to maintain its lead.

Vitamins and dietary supplements such as Centrum and Emergen-C see strong growth

Against a backdrop of Coronavirus (COVID-19), vitamins and dietary supplements are two categories recording strong growth as consumers around the world look for immunity and holistic wellness to combat health complications even before they arise. The US remains the largest market for vitamins and dietary supplements for GSK, although China looks very promising too.

Despite COVID-19 panic buying, OTC see only slight positive growth

COVID-19-related hoarding of cough and cold medications and analgesics in the first quarter of 2020 had a positive impact on GSK’s sales. However, second quarter falls have evened out 2020 growth, expected to leave GSK with a full-year decline in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies. The Rx-to-OTC switch of Voltaren in the US will keep analgesics sales for GSK more than buoyant.

GSK achieves divestment target of USD1 billion in 2020

GSK had set itself a target of USD1 billion in divestments which it reached in October 2020. It divested Horlicks in India to Unilever at the end of 2018 and sold 15 European brands including skin care and other OTC drugs, among other divestments.

Herbal/Traditional offerings grow as consumer perception shifts

With more consumers looking to replace medicines with natural or herbal alternatives, herbal/traditional products are seeing strong growth. GSK saw continued international success for Benefiber, Baldriparan, Gingium and Iodex.
